  • 3.1 to 3100 swap?

    I have a 89 3.1 cutlass. The head gaskets and fuel injectors are bad. Can I swap in a 3100 engine and re-use my ecm and transmission? I would like to re-use my transmission(non E) because it has recently been rebuilt. I have been reading about the 3100 top end swap, but I think it would be better just to swap in the whole 3100 engine (higher compression etc) and my engine is pushing 260,000 miles. Or if I use the 3100 PCM will it work with the older transmission? Thank you

    Not sure how your motor mount setup works but yah, you should be able to bolt a 3100 in w/o problems. It'll fit your tranny and should fit all of your mounts.

    you may have to extend the harness for the knock sensor, if you get an older 3100 with the multech 1 injectors just swap over your injector harness. Also, a longer throttle cable may be needed, i know us Cavalier guys use them from 3100 Berettas, Corsicas and 2.2L Cavaliers.

    your computer will run it fine, however you may need to do some tuning to get the best fuel economy out of it.
