OK, I can tell you what not to buy. Don't buy a rebuilt engine if it's from Optimax Engine Reman. When I worked for them we called them Opi-Hacks. They build motors for UAP/Napa, bumper to bumper and genuine auto parts. Maybe more but you'll know when you see the big "Optimax" logo on the box. Also don't ever buy a rebuilt from AC Delco. They are even worse, I know because when I worked for optimax one of our ditribution centers took of an AC Delco distributor. So they sent us all there AC rebuilt motors, I think it was about a 100 or so, but we had to tear them all down and check them out before we could stick our name on them. Bad shit, I tell you. Also I worked with some people who rebuilt engine's for AC and they told me all their Hack stories.
Actually, I've got some time here so I will blab a little more. If it were me I would buy the new motor and tear it down and inspect all components, clean it out properly and use better gaskets and valve seals. It will void the warranty but you would have to fight for it anyway because 4 out of 5 warranty claims are caused from faulty installation.
Actually, my boss when I worked for Optimax had a new Grand Prix GTP and it always had a tick, but GM couldn't figure it out. So, when the warranty expired he pulled the motor and found a couple different things wrong. The cam was chipped on one of the lobes (The Tick). Also the bottom of the block was full of sand, from the casting process. They didn't clean it out properly at all, so that explained his water pump change at 20000Km.
