I have a 95 Riviera with 3.8L SC and 4T60E. Yesterday the car started making a horrible noise as I pulled into a parking lot. I stopped the car. Now, when I put it in any gear but neutral it sounds like it's going into gear and moves a few inches, but then emits a loud grinding noise. If I put it in gear with the engine off and push the car, it moves but the engine shakes back and forth like it's half connected to the driveshaft. My question is, when I get back from my business trip Friday, is there any way to diagnose what the problem is? Is the TCC solenoid or vacuum modulator a remote possibility, or are these not even on the list. I would try to fix anything short of removing the transmission; that's too much for me. Thanks.

I've had a tranny (4L60E) very low on fluid (very very low) and it made some very bad grinding noises. So that is the first place I would start.-Brad-

If you can, pull the oil pan off the trans and see whats in the bottom of it. Your description sounds just like the problem I had a couple weeks ago.
Here is a pic of what happened to mine. Same trans BTW.
This is the final drive assembly. In the middle, you will see whats left of the planetary gear assembly pinion pin. 3 pieces now.
If you want to see more pics of it, go here...

Answer: Final drive
The final drive/differential gears were, in technical terms "shredded". I've looked at drawings of the entire assembly in the service manual, and saw the gears - teeth ground off - but still can't quite picture how the whole thing works. In any case, it's fixed now. What absolutely amazes me is how small those gears are to push a two ton car, and how thin trans fluid is compared to gear oil. I'm changing my trans fluid every 30k or less from now on.
