  • For those w/4T60E knowledge

Thanks in advance for any replies...

I have a 93 Olds Cutlass Convertible with a 4T60E. It has 216,000 miles on it and the reverse gear is starting to go out.

I have a 4T60E out of a 96 Grand AM Quad 4 car that was given to me with 70,000 miles.
I understand there may be gear ratio differences, but is this tranny a swap for my tired 4T60E in my Cutlass?

If everything witht he transmission is operatiing correctly, before you start pulling transmissions, remove your exhaust crossover to gain acecss to the reverse servo. You need to try and get the lock ring out and get the cover off. A flat head screw driver wil help. Youll need to push down on it as well. once the ring is removed the cover wil pop uo just enough to reveal the cover seal, you have to destroy it by cutting it and pulling it out. The cover in most case woun't come out all the way with the seal on. After you get the cover off you'll have acess to the reverse servo. At this time you might see a cracked servo piston or a bad seal. Replace both. The Deal will have the parts, prices are very reasonable. Better yet you can look on your other transimssion, to see how getting the reverse servo cover off is done. Remember, its on the top back side by the shift lever, looks like a big button. By the way, if you try to use that Grandam transmission you'll hve to do some rewiring not to mention it would be impossible to use it as they have a differnt belhousing. Hope this helps

I will give that a try. The reverse thing is odd, it has reverse with cold fluid, but when warm, you have to rev the engine up to around 3,000 or so and reverse will bite. IT's not really even a slip. I hate to rev the engine up like that without load due to the age and miles on the motor.

Is this cracked piston issue a common item on the 4T60E?

dont see to many cracked servo pistons on the 4t60e. to me, it sounds more like a sticky valve or worn out valve bore in the valve body. a cracked piston usualy will cause issues hot or cold.

          I thought that the 4-cylinder GAs used a 4T40/45-E?

there were a couple years when the old quad 4 used the 4t60e, before the 4t40e came out in 95.

Then he might want to be careful...he says the Q4 trans is from a 1996. In 1993, unless his is a 3.4 DOHC, isn't gonna be a 4T60-E anyways...is it? I thought 1994 was the first year for 3.1's to get the 4T60-E.

My Cutlass most defininately has a 4T60-E and it is a 1993. The Quad 4 tranny is out of the question apparently due to the bell having a different bolt pattern than a 3.1.
I've had this car since 1996 and it had 48,000 miles on it when I bought it. I've serviced it religiously. It may be time to rebuild it now.

I'd check that servo. Either the piston is bad or the seal. What you described sounds like something is wrong over in that part. I have seen reverse servos fail. Hell I've seen servos fail period...

IIRC, the Quad4 bolt pattern is different from the 60 degree V6 bolt pattern so the Quad4 transmission will not work.

it is not even a matter of the pattern being different, the pattern is SIMILAR, but the bellhousing on the Quad 4 is TALLER, so it will not bolt up to the V6 at all. I found this out trying to do a 5-speed swap into a Cutlass using a Quad 4 tranny. Needless to say, I have the Automatic.

1991 was the first year to get the 4T60-E. Cars with the 3.4 DOHC, and the Cutlass Convertible had it.

I have a 4T60-E in my Cutlass Supreme that we got from a 1993 Lumina Z34.
