  • Just finished Isuzu 76mm 5-speed

Just finished the rebuild on my 5 speed trans. I picked it up from a local salvage yard.... only one i could find for that engine. I found one other for a 4 cyl isuzu. (Geo storm/isuzu impulse) Same transmission, different clutch housing. But anyways it looked pretty good.
I didnt really have to replace much except for a syncro assembly due to my error. Had the hub reversed when i tried to press it onto the output shaft- exploded.... scared the living daylights out of me. $150 for a new one....ouch. But other than that i just cleaned everything really good, replaced one bearing and all the seals. Should haul hella more ass than the 4t60 i took out of the car!

maybe. the isuzu i put in my car is the crowning acheivment of suck ass. first gear is way to steep for a v6, 3.91. mine also wont hesitate to let you shift into reverse at 50mph. the fdr is 3.45:1 and 5th is .74:1 and i still only gained like 3mpg from the trans swap (from a 4 speed stick). that said it still has to be more fun than a 4t60.

the isuzu in the v6 isnt the best for holding a bunch of power, but its ausome for choosing your gear ratios. there is so many different gearsets for final drive and each gear. the nice thing is the gears on the counterhsaft are seperate peices, the countershaft isnt one peice, so it makes swapping just one gear easy.

Actually I have read that the Isuzu spec 76mm stuff is much stronger than the GM spec 76mm stuff. Basically pulling the guts from a Geo Storm/Izusu Impulse and installing them in a GM case would net you a pretty stout transmission.

If I read the documentation correct there are two versions of the 76mm in the Storm/Impulse cars. One for the SOHC and one for the DOHC the gear spread and axle ratios are different.

1991 Isuzu Impulse RS AWD is basically a 76mm trans with a PTO for the rear differential. These transmissions handle a turbocharged intercooled 1.6L, and the Lotus elan has just the FWD version of the same engine with a 76mm.

So, I know we all love our Muncie/Getrag 282/284 transmissions, and loath the Isuzu 76mm trans, but I think it is just the GM spec transmissions that are complete junk.
