L Body: Axle Nut Size??

In regards to a 1990 Beretta GT, manual trans

The car has a bad CV on the drivers side, been bad since I got it a few months back and I'm finally getting around to replacing it. I do not have an allen wrench of the right size to fit the brake caliper bolts, does anyone know what size wrench I will need? Also, my larger sockets are too shallow to reach the nut on the end of the axle, therefore I must buy a deeper one, so does anyone know what size nut this is?

The axle nut is 30mm. The caliper bolt is 3/8 allen wrench or a 55T bit.

If you go to Sears, they have specific parts just for these actually. One is labeled as a axle nut socket, and the GM specific one is the 30mm. And they also have 3/8" (I think) allen bit sockets for brake calipers in several different sizes, or a pack that contains 4-5 of them.

the brake is 55T i just did mine .... the nut is a 30mm i got mine from napa

55T? as in torx? Mine was allen head, not torx. And it was 3/8 inch allen head for the brake caliper bolts and 30mm for the nut, as bszopi said. I ended up at napa and they were able to look it up and get me what I needed, I looked at a Sears hardware store and couldnt find a 30mm deep socket anywhere, even in the auto part and the help wasnt much help at all. Anyways, I got the new axle in and ended up doing brakes up front - the rotors that were in there had BIG pits all over the place! so I wasnt about to put them back in. Anyways the car still has a clunk feel and knock sound even with the new axle if I let the clutch out a bit harsh or go from decel to accel to quickly It sounds like its coming from the front drivers side but I'm not too sure on that. It is engine torque related - train tracks, braking, rough road, etc do not ever duplicate this noise/feel. The control arm bushings looked fine, and I was not able to wiggle the control arm at all when I had the knuckle out, except of course for up and down because there was no suspension tied to it. The upper transmission mount seems quite solid and the lower is brand new, as is the front mount on the engine. This leaves only the rear engine mount, hopefully tommorow I'll get a chance to get a look at it, I was too tired after the axle and brakes ordeal and it was starting to get a bit cold in the garage so I called it quits as soon as I had the car in a running state - havent even cleaned up yet, and my 'rents aint happy about that!

Lots of people use the allen head in the torx 55T cause it will work but it's not recommended.

some gm caliper bolts are Torx and some are a 3/8th allen bolt.

it depends on what year of vehicle it is.

Sometimes after market caliper bolts are hex while the stock ones are torx.

Mine are 3/8 Allen head, as to whether or not they're original I don't know... I have no reason to suspect they're not original.

they changed from torx to hex around 90-91

My 93 GP uses Torx, im pretty sure the T55 (big sucker) and my axle nuts are 36mm... so there isnt a "generic" GM axle nut socket.. they range from 30 to 36mm
