  • L-body V6/282 gears in a W-body V6/282 case?

right now i am having major traction problems in 1st and 2nd gear. i'm using a Getrag 282 from an '89 Grand Prix. 1st gear is so damn steep it makes the car really hard to launch. the tires go up in smoke once i reach ~10psi in 2nd gear as well.

is it possible to replace the current 3.77 1st gear and 2.19 2nd gear with 3.50 1st and 2.05 2nd gear from a V6 L-body 282? would there be a noticeable improvement in traction? i would like to rebuild the extra W-body 282 i have in my garage like this if possible:

    1st - 3.50 (from L-body V6/282 for easier launching/traction)
    2nd - 2.05 (from L-body V6/282 for more traction)
    3rd - 1.38 (same)
    4th - 1.03 (retain W-body V6/282 4th gear for acceleration)
    5th - .72 (from L-body V6/282 for lower cruising RPM)

at first i thought i could simply drop an L-body V6/282 into my Cutlass but that is not possible since the case has no provision for the W-body trans mount and it uses an external slave cylinder which looks like it would interfere with the TGP turbo & lower IC pipe. another guy on the W-body forum said the W-body axles wouldn't fit the L-body 282 anyway. so it's looking like the only option would be to have the gears i want installed into my W-body 282 case when i have it rebuilt. i just want to know if this is possible and if it is would i notice a significant improvement in traction?

also....is there a numerically lower FDR i could use? or is 3.61 it?

    thanks

Josh, check out this link from this site:

Looks the only other FDR would be a 3.94 which would be the opposite direction of what you are looking for. But, useful info anyway.

yeah that's the page i've been going off of for gear ratios. 5-speeds are fun but god i'm starting to almost hate it. it's taking the abuse no problem but the car is no fun until 3rd gear. HOPEFULLY getting L-body gears installed into a W-body 282 case works out. i can get a 282 out of an '88 Beretta GT for $60 but i wish i had a better idea if this was going to work or not before i go through the trouble of pulling it.

i wish there were more aftermarket available for the 282....taller FDR and a Quaife LSD would be NICE.
