car won't move - off/on then it's fine

96 grand prix 3.1
After the car sits for 6 or 8 hours, it won’t move when put in gear. If you rev the engine it will move a couple of inches very slowly. It does this no mater what gear I’m in. If I shut the engine off for a min and then restart – it works fine. It then drives normally – shifts fine and sounds OK.

I changed the oil and filter but it still does it. Any ideas?

Same problem 4T60E 93 Buick

I have a 93 Buick Regal 3.8 engine. It does the same thing. Barely moves when you first start it. Does it in all gears and is usually OK for hours once it has been run. I changed trans oil and filter also. It's my wife's car - I know she usually just turns it on like 5-10 mins before she's ready to move it . It's been this way for awhile (months) and doesn't seem to be getting much if any worse - just a nuisance if you are in a hurry. I haven't tried turning off and back on. Already ran it today so will have to try that next time I can catch it cold to see if that does same as what you found. It does fine shifting and powerwise once it starts moving. This is more of a sudden 'kick in' not a gradual power build up.

both cases, you have converter drianback/charge issues, aswell as could have worn out sealing rings. both cases, the tranny needs to be overhauled. it could also be valvebody related aswell., like a valve hanging up.

I worked fine for two days. but today it did it again. Also, turning off/on didn't work this time.

Is there any quick fix for this? Is there some kind of additive I could try?

as ive said before, additives wont put friction material back onto clutch plates, cant replace broken/ worn gears, and cant replace the rubber on worn out seals.

that being said, no, there is no quick fix.

It's a check valve either on the converter drainback to the front pump (not getting pressure), or the pickup is blocked somehow.

In any case, it's not worth just pulling the valvebody apart.

Yank the tranny, and get it overhauled. If you drop it off at a tranny shop yourself, you save an ASSLOAD of money.
