How hard is it really? They have some nice tech manuals out there, so I wouldn't think it would be that hard........

The hardest part is changing the bands and clutches. I have heard you can buy these new and preassembled. If not, rip out the valve body and the rest of the internals and take it to a shop to change the clutch packs (under pressure NEED special tools) and buy a rebuild kit from a transmission SUPPLY store (parts wholesaler) Not a transmission shop, BIG difference. You should be able to buy a kit that comes with a new valve body and gaskets and so forth. If you befriend someone from a tranny shop or even talk to the owner see what they charge to just swap the clutch pack (cash, after hours, no receipt. Greedy people love those deals). I have done this on my other brand name of car and want to do my 700-R4 nextWhy pay someone to do the work, it costs alot and you don\'t learn s*^t!!!

I just took my 60E in to a trans place where im buddies with the owner.. he still wants to charge $900 for a complete rebuild. I mean good grief, what parts in a rebuild cost that much!??!? Granted, thats half of what I was charged when I got it rebuilt 4 years ago..I modify stuff

Just buy the kit and strip out whatever you can from your tranny (take pics!!) THEN take it to the shop for the parts you can't do. Ask about the AFTER HOURS prices (wink wink) that don't hit the till. If your good enough you can do it for under $500 ($250 or less to owner to do a couple of minutes work) then reassemble it yourself. Why pay someone to do the work, it costs alot and you don\'t learn s*^t!!!

It is not that difficult of a task, just so long as you have a tech manual at your side. There are several special tools that I can remember needing. One to remove the input hub/3rd clutch assembly, the input shaft endplay tool, and the tools to measure final drive endplay. All you have to do to take the clutch pack apart is a screwdriver to remove the snap ring. The spring that is in the clutch packs is really not that strong, you can push them down by hand pretty easily. The whole rebuild is something you can do yourself. Before I finish I found all the part numbers J-33381 is the tool for the input hub. Tools J-33386, J-26958, and j-26958-10 are used for input shaft end play. Tools J-25025, J-8001-1, J-26900-12, and J26958-10 are used for final drive end play.
