  • Which Limted Slip??

Do to recent events (i.e. Indiana snow) I have decied to allowacte the funds to getting a LSD, but which one?? Phantom Grip looks like a good one, but also looks like it has particulars on installing. The Phantom Grip website only lists one for the 4T60, and not the 4T60E, so will it work? While i'm at it, would this be the best time to upgrade the diff from 3.06 to 3.33? That would give me a nice fdr from 2.95 to 3.21 change. What about the lsd from enginered tech?? That thing looks like it replaces the whole spider gear set-up, but costs major mulla, and they are on a 6 month back order. (?!?!?!) Any help/suggestions is greatly appreciated. Also, will any of this LSD/changeing diff ratos screw with obd 1.5 in the '95 GA?? Thanks for the help.

    RE: Which Limted Slip??

The PG is not a true limited slip. It is just two block of steel with springs that applies pressure against the spider gears. There is another verison out there (gr8grip maybe?) that uses more blocks and more springs, to apply more pressure. Both of these designs are better than an open diff, but IMO not as good as a tru limited slip, like the Engineered Performance unit. EP adds clutch packs behind the spider gears that provide the friction, whereas the PG and gr8grip rely on metal-to-metal contact, which provides less friction.

Ahhahahahaa. I love it, Indiana Snow. Its like your hard done by there. Phfff. My dad has lived in Indiana for the last 14 or more years now. Everytime I go down during X-mas, That is not what I'd call snow. - Just giving you a hard time.

Best is how my Brother and Sister down there would get days off of school for what we would call a Skiff of snow.
I only ever had 1 day of cancelled school in my life due to snow, Because it was 3 feet of powder that was dumped in hours. However I do agree you guys get that damn'd freezing ice, which does suck and makes things really shitty.

Invest in some Winter tyres. They are worth it. Both my talons have GoodYear Ultra Grips on them, AWD + Winter Tyres = Bring it on!

However I agree with Marty on all the points he has made.

It will not screw with anything. Your speedo and everything will still work the same due to the Reluctor for the speedo is ON the diff itself too.
If you can wait for the EP unit. I would go that route.

Not yet. I have had it for about a month now, but the trans is still disassembled. I need to put it all back together this winter and get it in the car.

The "E" at the end of 4T60E means that the transmission is electronically controlled. I believe the drivetrain internals are mostly the same between the two. An LSD is a good idea for winter though. I hate how one tire spins so easily and causes the car to slide.

Winter tires are good for handling and stopping but I find I have just as much difficulty going from a stop with Michelin X-Ices as I did with all-seasons.

Well, as my car becomes more and more a "60degreev6.com" car, i took the adivec here and went with the eibach springs, Kyb Gr2's, all poly kyb Bushings mounts, etc, So i think snow tires are out of the question. Yes the car still clears up to 4.5-5 inches max. And i also bought light weight rims (17X7.5 estrealla "diamond" finish- 18.5lbs") which i don't want screwed with on mounting and dismounting snow/ice tires. I have summotio tires, 225/45/17 M+S rated. They are doing a real good job actually, i just wish the other tire would pull it's weight. So, you all think engineering tech is the way to go? How hard is this to do? drop the whole trans again? Thanks for all the input.

Is that the HTR+ tire? I've got them on my GTP. I'm actually fairly impressed with it saying /ZR17 on the end and doing that well in the snow. Impressive for a cheap performance tire.

For the LSD. You'd have to drop the tranny, and open it and fish out the diff in order to install it. It's what we would call a 'labor intensive' procedure. But if you've tore apart a tranny like that before... you'll probably be able to do it quite well.

Theres no need to drop the trans, you pull off the passenger side wheel and unbolt the axel assembly from the side. (Never done it myself but have watched it be done multiple times). All you need are jackstands.

The reason you dont see any 4t60-e diffs is because allison transsmisson had a lot of fun making various versions of that particular trans. There are 3-4 possible configurations of the output shaft alone (berings, races, berings on the shaft, berrings on the hub, etc etc). This makes it impossible to build a single 4t60-e LSD that will fit them all.

ANd of course how many people actually know the particular configuration of thier transmission to such detail that they could provide a shop with the information needed to build an LSD.

Also what kind of LSD you can have varies based on your confugration, gearing, etc. Most good trans shops can make an LSD for you but they will need the car there. Typically if they have the parts on hand they can assemble an LSD for you in a couple hours and install it in another 2 or so.

Most units that can be built require pre-loading and are not full 50/50 diffs (Mine is more like 60/40). The only folks I know of that come closest to 50/50 diffs are enginnered performance. Though they have proven diffcult to get ahold of in the past. I reccomend hitting up ZZP/Certified or Dynotech Performance (where I had my trans done)

Yes I have the Summitumo H/r rated M+S tires. My second set, and they do well in the snow. I am going to call my trannie shop and see if they will build me one. Or, if I get pissed enough (which happens alot with this car/project) I will just weld the f'n diff, full posi, drivetrain be damned.
