  • 4T60E rebuild

If I have a shop rebuild the 4T60-E trans and put it in. How long will you say it will last me down the road with the proper maintenance of fluid change and filter change?

    RE: 4T60E rebuild

im in the trade, and if i could tell you that, id be working as a phycic.

its impossible to tell you how long it will last. we commonly see them between 90 and 120k km for their first rebuild. some last longer, some dont. there are way to many variables to predict it.

The tranny is in the shop right now getting rebuilt. I don't know how long it is going to take though and then I have to bring my car down so they can put it in.

Well..I have just noticed something different today. I drove to the grocery store a mile and the I was paying attention to the miles and it is telling me I drove 3 miles. Then on my way back home I reset the trip and the trip thinks I am going 13 miles. I was like holy sh**. I have been driving like this for a few months now.

Well..When I get the car back with the trans in I have a tranny cooler I can install. I was finding out also on w-body.com but wasn't to sure if everyone went to the same sites. Would I want to put the tranny cooler before or after the radiator. Would I want the radiator to cool it first and then have the tranny cooler go head or the tranny cooler first and then the radiator?

      Thanks!

Common sense tells me After the rad.

You know I told you to put that in a while back... You didn't want to.

well, depending on the condition of the tranny, they may not want you to run the rad for a cooler. at my shop if a tranny is loaded with metal or very burnt up, we install a tranny cooler and bypass the rad completly. often there are to many contaminents stuck in the rad, and they could come loose and end back up in the tranny.

And I thought you wouldn't go here?

Before I bought the car it was hooked up. I don't know how it was hooked up though because I bought the car when it was in pieces. The guy who had the car before me had a tranny shop install this seperate tranny cooler in the car.

i would be sure to put a can of cooler cleaner through it first. i have mine installed after the radiator, and it's in front of the rad/condenser, and it works great. my tranny guy said not to worry about cooling it too much. as far as how long your tranny will last.... my 4t60e was recalled--rebuilt pre 50K. it now has 140K and my tranny guy said he'd expect another 100K, with the cooler and adjustable modulator to firm up the shifts, but not too much.

Thats the problems with the 4T60-E's. Some of them will last a very long time and some of them will only last up to 50k - 100k. When spring comes up I will probably install the trans cooler I have. No way I am going out in the cold and hooking it up! But tomorrow the car goes to the shop to get the tranny put in!

                  Little update on the car:

The car has been at the shop since November 28th. Last week I called a bunch of times asking about it and they gave me worthless information. Finally left a message on the owners cell phone because he didn't answer. I guess he was on vacation last week and the workers in the shop were telling me he was in and was just busy. So they took my # and said he would call me back when he wasn't even there.

The owner tells me that the tranny I dropped off is no good. I dropped it off so it could be rebuilt, but I guess it is past that phase. Then he said the tranny in the car was rebuilt for racing and was beat to hell when it was actually stock. The only thing different was a higher torque converter. 2800 to be precise.

Now out of the blue he said he has a couple 4T60-E's playing around the shop that he can put in the car. Now I guess I am supposed to be high priority if they aren't playing around.

Thats what they keep on saying at CGP. But I don't know what to do. The guy that owns thwe shop is my moms friend and she needed a new engine in her van and he did good on that. They did that in 2 weeks and now it's my car with a tranny problem and they have had the car for over 2 weeks now.

Just tell him you'll take the stuff back and rethink what you really want to do. Then go somewhere else!!!! He may know engines, but from the sound of it, he dosen't know much about trannys. If I experienced what you did at my tranny shop, I'd never go back there!

people that really know trannies are very hard to come by. from what you said on cgp, it sounds like theyre turning around a little. are they putting in sonax parts or gm or used or what?

I will have to ask tomorrow and find out. I also have to tell him I want the 2800 stall TC I had on there if he doesn't put it back on.

Personally, I perfer a little lower stall. About 2500 or lower, unless you have a big cam.
