  • Transmission problems

The last couple weeks the trans has been not working right. When I start the car in the morning and let it warm up a little bit and then put it in drive the car goes no where. It will just rev and move about 2 mph and thats it. Once the car is warm it doesn't do it anymore. It will shift everytime and not slip. I thought maybe the filter was clogged and then put a new filter in it with Quacker State trans fluid. Ran fine for the first 2 or 3 days and then after that started acting up again.

Today I took it to a local transmission shop to see what is wrong with it and the guy took it for a test drive. The car shifted right everytime but it wouldn't go in overdrive. I told him that the trans is from a 96 GP and only has about 33k miles on it and has a 3000 stall on it. He said that could be the problem. He said that he didn't know if the gear ratio on the trans was the same as the 95. He said it could be that or it could be the transmission going bad.

I asked him how much it would cost to get the orginal trans rebuilt (I still have it and it has 107k on it) and he told me he would put a new torque converter on it. It would be about $1,200.

Does anyone else know what could be wrong with it and if that is a good price? And is it doing this because the transmisson I have in the car righ now is a 96 and I can only use a 94 and 95 trans?

If the rebuild is done right, and the trans is out of the car then yeah, i'd say thats a fair price. But ask what parts they are using. It cost me 1200 also in parts to rebuild my 4T60E, but i got sonnex modifed valve body, sonnex sun gear, hardned input shafts, z-pak cluches, trans-go shift kit, bigger sevro (sonnex), differnt springs for increased line pressure, and a heavy duty sonnex rebild/hardware kit ( whatever else it took to put back together), then had it topped off with Vavlvoline synthetic trans fuild. It cost 986 for the labor to take it out of the car, then fix the trans anfd then put it back in. So my total was about 2200.00 The place was T and S transmissions in Martinsville, Indiana. I have a 95'GA SE. I don't really think the year of the trans would make a difference or not, only maybe the electrical connections and what is running them.
Don\'t hate me because I\'m horny.

well, 97+ they went to PWM lockup (pulse width modulated). basicly it turns lockup on and off real fast to make it a less firm engaugment and for better gas mailage. there are slight changes in the valve body aswell as electical.
