  • ? for those who have done a 91-93 W-Body 5 speed swap

I'm wondering if there are any differences between the firewall plates of a 91-93 auto and manual? I'm referring to the removable plate that the brake booster is in and the clutch push rod feeds through. I'm doing a 5 speed conversion on my 93 GTP and I'm hoping I don't need to swap the firewall plate.
I spent a few hours yesterday just getting the damn clutch/brake pedal bracket out of my 92 Z34. What a PITA that was!!

on my 93 GTP all i had to do is where the master cylinder for the clutch goes though that plate which allready had a hole with a rubber plug in it, is just to make it a square whole with file or drimel drill, just make sure you don;t make it to big, because it is easyer to remove metal then it is to add it back, what trany are you useing? 284 or 282, i used the 284

I'm using the 284 from my 92 Z34 donor car. I think I'm going to swap the firewall plates, but first I'm going to size everything up and see what's involved in doing so.

I swapped the firewall plate. You will need to pull the dash, fun times:P There is a bit involved on it but you can do it as long as you are able to pull the dash out (cutlass owners, good luck).

So the plate comes out inside of the car? I thought it came out on the engine bay side. Do I need to pull the brake booster out or can I leave everything on that side of the firewall intact?

You gotta pull it all. Brake booster, dash, pedal mount, streering column, heater core, 2 mounts for the dash on the engine bay side...then slide it over and in once everything is out of the way. Like I said, not the easiest task. This is why other people just grind on the hole and make the clutch hydraulic mount. It would be at the wrong angle but whatever.

either way the brake booster has to come out, to get access to the clutch master cylnder, and you would also need to take the cool lines from the heater core off, and the a/c lines going to the evaporator(i think thats what it's called), and removed the whole dash with padel assembley, actually with my 93 GTP there was already a spot on the padel assembley were the clutch pedal goes, so all i did was change the brake pedal and put the clutch pedal in,

bumping an old topic just to post some pics on this i guess. what a bitch this was to get out of there! the worst part was just getting the long brake pedal pivot bolt out...it's a PITA even with the dash out of the way. i'm swapping out the plate for two reasons - get rid of the PMIII ABS and converting to vacuum brakes and also so i don't have to modify the hole for the clutch master cylinder for the 5-speed swap (like i did with my Cutlass). there's a 2.8/5-speed '88 GP in the local j/y so i should have the new plate soon.

could be worse i guess, at least i'm not dealing with a '94+ W-body.

to anyone who does this - it's wayyy easier to pull the plate out WITH the pedal/steering column bracket still attatched to the plate. pull it all out as an assembly with the pedals and all:

this way you don't have to mess around with pulling the pedals out or trying to reach all of the hidden bolts that attatch the bracket to the plate.

I pulled the dash too since I had a replacement plate.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

the plate you need to use depends on what braking system your car has since the vacuum booster (or ABS master cylinder) mounts to it as well as the clutch master cylinder. i am converting my car from PowerMaster III ABS brakes to regular vacuum brakes and swapping the 5-speed in at the same time, so i went and got a plate from an '88 Grand Prix i found in the j/y with vacuum/brakes & 5-speed transmission.
