what is the diffences between the 4T60-E, 465-e. and the 4T80-E?

  • #2
should have posted this in the "transmissions" section.

they are all 4speeds i believe, but the higher the last numbers the stronger/better they supposedly are. i'm sure they have differences internaly, as well as actualy getting bigger on the outside. should all be "E" trannies which require pcm's to work properly.

The 4T65-E also comes in a heavy duty (HD) flavour that was used in the performance option W-bodies like the 97+ grand prix GTP's and bonneville SSEI's.

the 4t60e is an electronic version of the 440t4 used in the 80s and early 90s. the 4t65e is a beefed up version of the 4t60e, and it also uses an electronic pressure controll solonoid rather than a vacume modulator to controll pressure. the 4t65e hd is the same tranny, just stronger parts. it is used behine the l67, and a more beefed up version behind the new gxp 5.3l grand prix.

the 4t80e is a different breed altogether, being used exclusivly behind the 4.0l aurora and 4.6l northstar engine. it is a 4 speed, all electronic. the tranny is massive for a fwd, and is designed to hold the v8 torque.

do they all have the same bolt pattern? also so then the 4T65-e HD would be a good choice for a heavily modified 3100?

they all have a small gm bolt pattern except for the 4t80e. it is a moddified small gm pattern and only uses 4 bolts.

the 4t65e-hd would be your best choice if you stick with auto. however you are going to need a computer and wiring harness compatible to run this thing. the thing is the hd has a unique fdr, so you need a pcm that you will be able to modify.

is that unit a plug and play so i can adjust shift points and line pressure? is the 4t65-e hd also a vaccum controlled tranny like the 4t60-e?

no the 4t65e (and hd) uses an EPC solonoid (electronic pressure controll) instead of the vacume modulator. much more accurate and more for the pcm to manipulate.

The 4t65e-hd is fully electronic. (which has been mentioned if you read the replies to the post) In my GTP you can press the button for 'Performance shift'. I know it changes the shift firmness, and i think maybe the shift point too. If it wasnt electronic, you wouldnt be able to do that at the press of a button.

the sport/economy is nothing new, ive even seen them with 4t60e trans. basicly your pcm has 2 sets of parameters and you switch between them. i beleive it also moddifyes your fuel and timing as well.

2003+ grand prix have the option for paddle shift. in this mode, when you hit a padle, it sends a signal to the pcm telling it to shift, and it comands the tranny to shift. its a pretty simple setup. same idea with the "tap shift" or "autostick". its actualy a pretty cool thing what you can do with an electronicly controlled tranny
