  • AWD tranny ?s

Did GM or any one else for that matter ever make a MANUAL AWD tranny that will bolt up to a 60v6?

    Thanks

There seems to be a pattern there.

    RE: AWD tranny ?s

Theres a GMC Jimmy in my back yard with a 5spd AWD tranny bolted to a 2.8. So yes. If you ment for transvers engines...then no. Only automatic...if you can find one.

Get a 4x4 S-Truck with a 2.8L 5 Speed and swap in an Astro van AWD case.

Astros used AWD. As in a viscous coupling powering all 4 wheels all the time.

It will bolt in place of an S-Series T-Case.

Ok, Let me see if I got this straight... You say I can take at longitudinal manual tranny from an S10, gut it, stuff the internals into an auto awd transvers bell housing from an APV and everything will work out? Something doesnt' quite fit there in my mind. First off, the APV tranny wont' have the proper equipment for the clutch,(nothing some fancy welding/fabrication couldn't fix i guess) and arent' they comepletely different styles of internals? (I've never tore into a tranny further then replaceing a clutch sorry for the ignorance)

Ok next question, Would there be any advantage to using the APV tranny/transfer case over say an AWD 6000STE Tranny/case with the 2.8?

Finaly, stupid Idea time How high would I have to jack the suspension to do a full s10 longitudinal mount so I wouldn't have to break two trannys apart? Or would the effort in a custom longitudinal mount not be worth it either?

            Thanks

How about the Pontiac 6000 AWD? Correct me if necessary, but it seems to me that was a V660.

Yeah, but it was transverse. He seems to be looking for a North-South setup.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

What are you looking for transverse or longitudinal? The Astro is a RWD or AWD van with a 4.3L V6 and a 700R4, 4L60 or 4L60/65E transmission. If it is an AWD modle it is set up EXACTLY like a 4X4 truck with a front and rear axle and a center section. The Transfer case bolts to the back of the transmission like any truck. Astro vans are not homo sexual FWD minivans.

Sorry, I had my vans mixed up. I was originally looking at doing a transverse setup, but the more I look into it and think about it, a longitudinal setup might be a lot more fun, more work of course but more fun.

Ok time to clear my mind again, back to the drawing board.

S10 tranny, to Astro Tx case, Why couldn't you just use the whole setup from the s-10?

Well you could but there is only the Bravada and Sy/Ty's that were AWD. If you cut up a Sy/Ty for some project you might get lynched.

Anyway the Bravada is far less common than the Astro but they are both the exact same transfer case.

Stick another auto transvers on the non powered side. Twin engine. Using a North-South engine /tranny on a FWD chassis is crazy...then again..GM did it to the Lumina. I only see auto from a 6000 or a newer Mini/Aztec working without major surgery.

Ok.. Bring on the dead horse, he needs another beating...

Since the subject of the 6000STE AWD tranny was brought up.. Wouldn't it be possible to pull just the transfer case from that and strap it onto my 284? Maybe just Maybe??

I'm pulling straws now if you can't tell.

                            Thanks

the TC on AWD trans you speak of comes off the snout, you'd have to make some custom adapter to make it work for sure. I don't see why it wouldn't work, but you'd have to make sure the FDR of the rear end matches the FDR of the Manual Trans to.
