  • 4WD tranny swap

    Hi,
I am brand new to this place I have a Suzuki Samurai that I am making into a trail rig, anyway I just bought a 2.8L and its tranny from a 2WD 82 S10 blazer to put in it. Here's the deal: after lots of reasearch I found out that the 4 speed manual tranny connected to it is gm's version of the T4. Here's my question, could I just get an actual Jeep T4 4wd tranny and bolt it up in the place of the other?
    Thanks
    Ricky

What you are suggesting will work, but...

The Jeep versions of the T4 (four speed) and the T5 (five speed) trannies have a different bolt pattern on the end where they bolt to the bell housing than the GM versions T4 and T5. You would need the Jeep bell housing as well as the Jeep trans.

The trans and bell can be from either a Jeep with the 2.8 V6 or it can be from an 83 or later Jeep with the AMC 2.5L four.

Warning Will Robinson Warning! The 2.5L Iron Duke four used in Jeeps 82 and earlier has a different bolt pattern and this bell will not fit your 2.8L engine, so watch out when you buy. (I think those years are correct, but you should get independent verification).

Jeep continued to use the 2.8V6 bolt pattern on their latter trannies, so you could go for a latter 5 speed AX15 and others. There is a good post at one of the Jeep web sites (don't have the site in hand right now, but can get later) on what fits the 2.8V6 bolt pattern, and there is quite a selection of 4WD trannies that will fit that engine.

A lot of Chevy S-10s with 4WD came with the 2.8V6, have you thought about one of those trannies??

PS I am looking for a T4 four speed from a 2 wheel drive 83 to 87 S-10 for my project, so if that is what you have and you are looking to get some cash for your old trans, message PM me here at this site.

Thanks for the info, glad you let me know about the bellhousing not matching up. Reason I want a Jeep T4/T5 is because they bolt up to a Dana 300 which I have sitting in my garage waitng to be twinsticked and hooked up.

        Piper,
I left you a PM about an S10 (Isuzu built) 4 speed as well as a S10 T4 that i may be interested in selling.

        Ricky,
I agree, using a S10 4WD gearbox may be better... Just because there are more of them and thus may be easier to find/replace if you ever need to.
