  • Venture 5-Speed in a Grand Am?

Ok, I have a article from Car Craft Magazine (May 93) about the Grand Am GTO Prototype they were going to produce. Very , very interesting numbers! They said it was the fastest FWD car they had ever driven. Track times for the quarter mile was 14.1 @ 93.4 mph! It came with the 3.4L SFI (LA1) engine, Ram Air VI (true Ram Air too), and a 5-Speed Manual trans (Hurst Shifter also). Don't believe me? I got the article right here. It says it has a 3.50:1 1st fear, and 3.61:1 final.

Anyways, my question is, does anyone here have any information on the New Venture 5-Speed that the GAGTO comes with? Where can ya get it, stuff like that?

If you look at brian89gp's website there is tranny info listed that lists gears ratios for the Quad 4 getrag 282 and it has a 3.50 1st gear and a 3.61 FDR. Like he said it's the new venture version of the 282.

I have a 282 that was for sale awhile back, but Marty (RacerX11) already beat you to it. You can usually come by them pretty easy in junkyards, as they were one of the main 5-spds used in 660 cars, from Fieros to Berettas, Cavaliers, etc...

Damn, Oh well. The junk yards around here suck. I will just keep an eye out for one I guess. Does any one have info on the 282s that they could post? I am very interested in swapping in one (of course after I fix the current problem with my car).

Ok, do you think that the shifter cable (and the other parts) from a GA's 5-Speed will work with the 282?

no you Must use the shifter cables and shifter assembly from the Donor Trans.

in the Jbodies even if its got the HM282 trans it uses differnt cables than the Isuzu 4cyl trans...

the older pre 00 GA's with the 2.4L 5spd combo was the iSHITzu trans, the newer 00+ GA's have the newversion Getrag 5spd.
the shifter cable setups even between those are so different.

as i was saying to Blackrider, (who is considering this swap as well) you'll need:

                  hm282 trans,
                  hm282 clutch slave/mastercyl/resevoir assembly.
                  hm282 shifter cables,
                  hm282 equiped car Shifter asm.

you'll also need the Nbody Manual trans Clutch/Brake pedal assembly.
                  custom mounts,
now the small things like figuring out IF the nbody driver side axle fits in is going to be interesting.
the Pass side axle will need to use the Intermediate Shaft from the HM282 equiped cars, and something will have to be done for a axle there too.

                  custom mounts, ect ect ect
with your car being a 95 i think i know of an easy way for you to get around your PCM autotrans problem, found it a while back on the fiero forums:

Thanks for the info! Much apprecated. Now you have a 282 correct? This is going to be quite a job.

And how did they get ahold of a 3.4 LA1 back in 1993? Or was there another 3.4 LA1 back then?

the New Venture used was probably the NVG-T550 like in the 93-94 J bodies.

Well the magazine says it was not the DOHC, it spefically says 3.4 single cam. This is when they were developing the new 3.1's that went into the GA's in '94. I don't know if it was a LA1, I just guessed, but it is a 3.4L. If you were to look at the prototype's pics, not the showcar's, they used the 3.1's upper intake plenum, and highly modified it (it still says 3.1 SFI on it).
