  • Getrag 284 question

I read somewhere online that removing the "accumulator" in the clutch line between the master cylinder and slave cylinder improves clutch feel and performance as well as transmission life on the pre-'93 Getrag 284. Has anyone heard of this before or know if there is any truth to it?

    Here's the quote I read:

If you have a pre-1993 getrag, remove the accumulator between the master and slave cylinder. This will improve performance and clutch feel and extend your transmissions life (This accumulator was put in to "soften" shifting).

I dont' know about an accumulator for a manual tranny, but in an auto they're used to soften/slow the clutch application... so I would assume what it does in a manual is absorb some of the clutch travel and slow it down.

People remove/delete the accumulators a lot in hi performance automatics, so I don't think it would do any harm in our transmission. I'll ask someone at school tomorrow.

I know Brian P did this mod, and I hope to do when I replace my clutch also.

I think Brian has some pics up on his website of some stuff he did.

The accumulator actually gets taken out and hydraulic line put in. I don't know how it would extend trans life though.
