  • Anyone know what cars used the "FA?B" torque c

    i read another post about factory torque converters and
    letter/number grading for material and stall speeds
    i cant find where the post is but last year i read on this forum
    somewhere about someone saying the older sunbirds having a higher
    stall torque converter?

    im guessing it was the "FAxx" type torque converter used in the ?sunbird?

    does anyone know wich cars used the "FA" type torque converters?

    if i can narrow it down a little then i can search the wreckers for it

    most auto recyclers sell the converter with the transmission. if they arent selling the transmission, it means its junk and if so, the converter will be full of crap that the tranny is full of (metal, clutch material).

    my recomendation is to go to a local transmission shop and buy a rebuilt converter (they will get it from their parts supplyer). just tell them you want a high stall converter for your transmission. there actualy is a factory converter that is 3000 stall (or 2950, something like that), so you arent actualy going to be paying for a custom built converter, its an off the shelf item.

    its gonna cost you more to do that, but you will be getting a freshly rebuilt converter, not some peice of garbage that could end up taking the tranny out.

        .
        Sorry to hijack the thread, but you seem to be pretty knowledgable when it comes to trannies. this has been bouncing around my head since my tranny rebuild. I told the guy that I wanted a higher stall converter, and he told me that the TC don't come higher and if I want more performance out of my tranny, that parts aren't the answer and what i need is a reprogrammed computer. the tranny is a 4t65-e.
        thanks

          i work at a tranny shop. right now im doing re/re but will become a builder eventualy.

          anyways, there isnt much you can do for shiftkit kinda thing. you can put a shift correction package in, however, its going to finx some shifting issues, but isnt going to make it shift harder. basicly, you need to reprogram your pcm or get an autotrans interceptor. however, a higher stall converter will help.

              I found out that the 98 Cavi with the 2.2l and 3t40 has the FK*b torque converter. Thats a 2760 stall with a woven griphite clutch. Sadly enough The 2.4 Z24 had the FZ*b tq converter...2375stall.

                yup, a less powerful engine will get a higher stall converted from factory.

                    The info I have lists the "b" converter as a 2560 RPM unit.
                    The 2760 RPM is a "k"
                    The highest is an "a" 2795 RPM

                    Full list:

                    a = 2795 RPM
                    k = 2760 RPM
                    b = 2560 RPM
                    c = 2385 RPM
                    z = 2375 RPM

                    If this is wrong please correct me.
