ok, so im starting to get the stuff together to have my tranny built up. finally.


unfortuneatly there is no "real aftermarket" for the tranny. just some upgraded clutches and steels. no hardened stuff like inputs shafts and other stuff...

these are the questions i have...


cryo treating - good or bad and why? are there other options? depending on the process, with the metal item need to be double checked for its specs to make sure they are still true?

what would be a good idea to have hardened within the tranny?

anyone know of a "complete rebuild kit" that i can purchase? i will be replacing most of the clutches with some of the 4t65e stuff.


any tips, tricks, or pointers on the assembly part to make it handle more power? like extra clutches, tightened spacing, etc?

not 100% sure on the rest, but as far as the heat treating, i read that hardened things are brittle and break before they bend, and in some cases it isnt worth the effort. it depends on the power level and application when it comes down to it.

From a transmission supply shop you can by master over haul kit that'll come with all the clutches.. When inspecting parts very carefully look at the hardning on the gear for the sun shell.. Once it starts to flake off it'll wear out rapidly and blow up.. also check the sun gear in the diff very closely for the same thing.. Check the wear in the valves, especialy the lock up valve.. this one likes to wear out causing lock up shudders and other lock up related problems.. Sonex sells an over sized valve and reaming tool if you need to replace it.. Also check the accumilator pistons, where they ride on the pin in the center.. This is another point that likes to wear on on higher milage transmissions.. It can cause a drop in line pressure and harsh shifting problems.. The pistons are like $3 to replace..

Bulkpart.com is where I got my stuff..minus the pump shaft and some washers. Sonnax is prob the best bet for "better" hard parts. Weak links are the 2nd clutch pack(alto has upgraded pack), Prag(new only..sonnax is a soft unit), sungear(sonnax), Sunshell(sonnax)4th pack(alto or raybestos) and 4th hub(sonnax) of what I know. Sonnax units are soppose to be better than OE. Other than that...just leaky hydrolics from time and smoth shifting. I was last quoted $53 for the sonnax final sun gear at my local trans parts shop. It gets pricy for the 4t60*s. Just keep searching like I did. Trans parts stores, bulkpart, www.altoredeagle.com, web. Trust me...I know where your comming from. No one here seems to know dittly squat about hopping up a trans.
