  • Flywheel confusion

I'm dazed and confused on 60 deg manual trans flywheels.

I understand that there are different flywheels for the earlier external balance 2.8L engines , and later neutral balance flywheels for the later 2.8 and 3.1. etc engines. That I understand, but after that I am confused.

I've never seen the flywheels for either a FWD or a RWD 60 deg V6 in person. Are they the same diameter? Same thickness? Any quick way to tell if a 60 deg manual trans flywheel is for a FWD or a RWD??

I thought that all the external balance RWD flywheels would be the same, but Advance Auto Parts shows a different p/n for the external balance Camaro flywheel compared to that for an external balance S-10 wheel. Is there really a difference or is Advanced data base jacked?

When I get into FWD manual trans flywheels I'm more confused. The Advanced Auto parts data base shows the same flywheel (casting number 14018712) used for two different FWD (Cavalier) applications; both a internal balance 2.8L V6 with a 9-1/8" clutch, and a 2.2L four cylinder with an 8-1/2" clutch. Again, seems odd. If true, is the flywheel drilled for two different pressure plates, or do the two different pressure plates have the same bolt pattern??

    Thanks for any help

    RE: Flywheel confusion

I know the Fiero guys have used both the 9-1/8" clutch, as well as the larger (9-11/16") early S-10 cluch on stock flywheels, so they must have the same pressure plate bolt pattern. I wouldn't be surprised if the same flywheel was used for the 4 cylinder as well with a smaller clutch disc.

I have a bunch of FWD flywheels, but have never compared them to any RWD ones. What application do you need a flywheel for?

      RE: Flywheel confusion

the RWD clutch for say a 2.8 fbody does use the same bolt pattern on the pressure plate/flywheel although its alot thicker so wouldnt work in a FWD application. Spec accidently sent me one of those clutches. I "think" the flywheel is thicker too. Because the 3800 RWD manual flywheel is used in Fiero's but they have to machine it down to clear.
