  • 5 speed swap

Finally found a 5 speed for the Z. I figured since the auto is junk, I might as well make it worth my while and put in the 5 speed. Found a company in Texas that sells reman trannys. My question is would it be easier to get a wiring harness from a 5 speed car, or adapt the one that I currently have? There is a 5 speed Z34 in the junk yard that has the wiring harness, pedals, master cylinders, all the linkages, shifter, consol, axles. Just no tranny. Is there anything else I would need? Thanks in advance

im not sure on the tranny you had. but if it was the "e" model you'd want to snag the pcm at least, the shifter console and the other goodies would be a great idea too. if it was just the 4t60 or what ever, with no electrical control, i think youd be fine.

Its the 4T60e. Im just gunna gank everything that looks important from the donor car.

The company in Texas is called Allstate Gear Company. All of their trannys are rebuilt with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. The price is $950 plus shipping, and there is a $150 core charge. The phone number is 1-800-577-1346

the only place that was able to rebuild the 284 was getrag. gm had a deal with them not to release any replacment parts for the tranny (except seals) so when it had to be rebuilt, it would go to getrag.

not impossible to rebuild, as long as you are willing to put used parts into it. there are no new, or nos parts out there for it, so if you want to rebuild one, you have to build 1 out of 2 (or more).

Ordered the trans today. Found a differernt one elsewhere, $750 shipped. Called one of the salvage yards in the area, he sounded kinda surprised when I told him what I was after. He did not have one, but he called some people who know some people who have one, and now its mine. Should be here on Friday, just in time for the weekend. Unfortunately, this is the busy season at work, lots of chemicals to spray, so if the weather's good, I'll be at work all weekend again. Then before too long, the corn and beans will be up, and we'll be even busier. So we shall see what happens.
