RE: W to J tranny swap
The 282s are the same no matter what body style (there were changes over the years though). The 284 is a much bigger beast and might have some problems squeezing into the J frame.-Brad-

The J-body 282 from certain years is slightly different, as it has the internal slave cylinder. I'm not sure if you could mix and match the hydraulics and make them work.

i'll have to keep that in mind. i looked up the ratios on the site, i kinda like the W's 282 ratios better than the J's. which is better than the isuzu i have right now, its got an icredibly steep 3.91:1 1st and the rest of the gears are about the same as everyone elses, but the fdr is 3.45. 1st is good to get roling, it just revs through there so fast you dont dare spend more than a second in that gear. i like gears that are sort of wide, so i can spend some time winding it out, listening to the motor steadily climb the tach, instead of zing *shift, zing *shift, zing.If you aren't friends with a liar, you aren't friends with anyone.

the j-body getrag 282 is best suited for you. the w body is a heavy car, and it needs the different first gear to get it going, were the j-body doesnt.
from what i have seen, this is the difference in the j-body getrags through the years
87-89- slave mounted on bracket on trans
90-92- slave mounted direct on bellhousing
93-94- internal slave, hall efect pickup speed sensor (not gear driven).
last time i looked in the books at work, the 93-94 isnt a getrag, i beleive its called a new venture 5tm40. i can double check this tomorow if i get time.
