282.. power limits

Ok I thought I'd hit this board up to see whats the max you guys have put a 282 through or known actually for a 282 to go through.

I'm really getting sick of seeing GM make crap for FWD tranny's

282 can take quite a bit of power. They're pretty tough trannies.

they say the tdc motor can put out over 400hp if done right, its got to go through something to get to the ground.

in one of the threads there is an article about a 455 olds in a fiero.

it is probably using a 69 tornado tranny.

oh, ididnt look at it that good. i know there is one in the same thread with a 454 in it, it has a latraly mounted setup

localy, there is a guy that does lots of fiero stuff. he had a 383 stroker smallblock (425hp, 480 ft/lb) with a 282 and couldnt kill the thing.

the 282 is a tough trans. beating on the thing will break it (power shifting, shifting with no clutch, driving with your hand on the shifter all the time) but driving it properly, it will stand up.

yes it is. its not as bad with a cable shifted trans as it is with a shift rod or shifter bolted to the trans.

basicly, when you rest your hand on the shifter, you tend to pull or push it farther into gear (kinda like you are trying to hold it in gear). this ends up aplying the syncro when you are already in gear, and will wear them out prematurly. ive seen many cases of vehicles with low mialage and toasted syncros.

I'm on my second 282, the original one died and didn't want to go into gear, finally i got it jammed into 3rd which is the last gear it was ever in. The one i have now has issues, i think it was ran low on oil one time in it's life, it leaks like crazy has strange issues. (it had 100k on it when i put it in). However, i don't think ANY of the issues were related to the engine power. I just hope the 287 in the Alero lasts a long time too.

hmm in a sense makes me want to pay the 2 grand to get this rebuilt then. They'll take it out do do whatever and throw it back in for that price. Looks like my next winter project

I wouldn't worry about the strength of the tranny, unless you're running slicks and doing clutch dumps, even then you'd probally kill the axles before the tranny fails.

I call BS on this one. Once the transmission is in gear, the blocker ring, synchro, and gear are all locked together......there is no way for the synchro to wear from just resting your hand on the shifter while in gear. Putting pressure on the shifter might wear the shifts forks early, but that's about it. Toasted synchros on a low milage vehicle are due to bad syncrhos, or abusive driving.

the local shop charged me 1200 to redo my 4spd, and it was already out of the car.
