  • Best clutch for 300ish

I am not finding much of a selection for $300.

I have the Centerforce dual friction at $266(free shipping) and Stage one for $208(FS again) plus the throw out bearing is extra

I think I heard these are not so good.

I did an ebay special first time around, $100...you get your moneys worth.

But I havent found anything else. Clutchmaster stage 2/3 is like $500 and Bully is $500+. That just seems a lot to me considering I can buy any brand stage 3 clutch I want for the Z for 250-350.....I guess because they make more and sell in a higher volume then our applications.

Anything I am missing? Thanks for the help.

    RE: Best clutch for 300ish

the centerforce clutch for any gm fwd with the v6 isnt any good. you get a dual friction disc and slightly improved pressure plate. the big thing with centerforce clutches is the near stock feeling pedal, but high clamping load. they do this by using counterweights on the fingers so centrifical forces pull them out and aply more pressure on the disk. in the v6 gm bellhousing, the pressure plate is to close to the tranny, and there is no room for the weights, so they just leave them off. this results in a slightly better pressure plate, but not a lot better.
plus the centerforce may be $266, but its another $100 for a release bearing from them, and you have to use their bearing.

the clutchmaster and bully are very good clutches. they come with everything you need, and they work ausome. they have a slightly heavier pedal feel, but are very drivable up to stage 3.

Their prices seem reasonable. You have any specifics on them....anyone else who has used it....care to go into detail of your experience with it?

Looks like I would go with their stage 3 and look into the "lightweight" option for an extra $79. I was going to spend $300 on a Fidanza flywheel. If theirs weight the same maybe they can cut me a deal on a package price.

I called Spec today. They said I am good with the stage 2 clutch as it holds over 300lbs of tq, and even with 9lbs intercooled I wont x that mark. I also asked about the lightweight option, they say its about 20% lighter. I think I will skip it. They also told me they will try and match the price on the ebay flywheel since they sell the same one. As of now he thinks he can do the stage 2 and flywheel for $650 shipped instead of $700+shipping.

are the light flys really worth it? i know the fricton surface is replaceablr, but how do they wear? if/when it weras out, what is the availability of the replacement?

i got a clucth from the fierostore.com. i think it was between 250 and 300 bucks. i cant remember which one off hand, made by ram i think, but seems a hell of a lot more beefy than the stock setup.

i just checked, ram made them all, its 54005 on this page, my car is a 4spd, so thats the one i got. they probably have the 5spd apps since fiero got the 5spds before they went out. looks like since the old motors werent neutral balanced, i may have to check the balance on the setup, i see a different number for the 5spd app. looks like all the clutches are under $300

If you aren't friends with a liar, you aren't friends with anyone.

the flywheel is the same for any tranny, 4 or 5 speed. the 80-87 motors were externaly balanced, were the 88+ were internaly balanced. you can tell the differance by looking at the weight on the back of the flywheel. if there is a weight, its an 80-87.

now if you have an external balanced flywheel, you can have the weight taken off and have the flywheel "neutral balanced" at a machine shop to use with an 88+ motor.

The flywheel is 8lbs which is a substantial loss. Geoff/Heavywoody has one on his 3100/getrag and is happy with it. I have an 11lb Fidanza on my 300ZX and it revs like a mofo to its 7400 cut off.
Since the 3.1 revs sort of slug like, the 8lb flywheel combined with the FFP pulley should help.

I've heard good things about spec stage 2 and 3 clutches, was planning on using one when whatever I have now burns out.

By chance anyone know the weight of any of the stock flywheels?
