  • LSD and Getrag questions

I am selling my Z this month and thought I would treat the GT to some goodies.

I have an old tired Getrag. I have new Gm cables as a start.
here is what I want to do.

I want it rebuilt, unless I tracked down a new one for cheap. I want a strong clutch, say $300. I bought one of those ebay specials for 100 and well it did its job, but it wont cut it.

I am also picking up the Fidanza 8lb flywheel. I am rockin some redline MTF, since I loved the ATF when I had an auto.

Lastly I want an LSD. 1st gear is sort of useless now with the 3.1, so why rush to put a 3400 and make it worse, so an LSD should come first.

Now I may have heard the "Phantom" LSD was sort of crappy? Is that true? Its about $240 on ebay, says it fits 5spd Getrag Fieros, so that must work for me too. I figure I would spend upto say $400 for an LSD.

Can anyone recommend the best clutch for 300 or less, and an LSD for 400 or less?

    I also test driving a 6spd 350 Z tmro, but I promise I wont buy it hehe

    Try Engineered Performance.

My Buddy and I installed one. It was pretty good but whoever removed the old bearings was a tool and nicked the journals.

I have the EP "race" LSD in my 5spd. Very good product. However its a bit more than your proposed $400 budget. Last I checked the Street version was around 5xx something.

Will the results from the phantom grip LSD be worth the $240?

the EP LSD definitely seems to be a MUCH better product than those phantom grip gr8 grip or others like that. I might end up getting one if i can't find a torsen by the time I need a new trans.

Hey Colin, If you don't mind me asking, how much did your LSD run you?

Will these LSDs work in the 284 or just in the 282?
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

Um I dont think you are ever gonna find a torsen to fit any GM FWD Tranny.

Mantapart still lists the Old GM auburn style LSD, If you could still get one or if you could get ahold of them and actually see the product come to your doorstep.. would be another issue all unto its own.

I paid 500something for the Street version over 2 years ago, Then upgraded to the Race spec last year and helped test out some prototype clutches. I do believe prices have gone up since then as I got it as a special new to the market deal, I think I purchased one of the first Getrag 5spd LSD's from them.

They did make Torsens for the 282, they've just since been discontinued.

Nope, it was a torsen. The only thing it came in stock was supposedly the Non-AC Quad442 and SCX. It used to be listed in the GMPP catalog years back aswell.

                        Hmm Funny

                        Torsen doesn't list it.

What years. I will pull up the service specs on it

I called Toyoda-Koki Torsen and they knew exactly what I was asking for, but they are discontinued and don't have any more.

Yeah was listed in the "Rocket Parts" section IIRC with the 2.3L quad parts.

I remember seeing it the GMPP section years back too. I priced the bastard out one time, I believe the GM price for it was like 4000$ CDN. I laughed my ass off.

There were only 7 SCX cars to come from the factory with the LSD, they were all Race ready and only race ready cars for Grand am racing however. No factory "customer showroom" cars had them.

They are the proverbial Needle in the haystack

However I thought the GM was the Auburn style one? Or was it the thorson? Thats why I thought Mantapart had that Auburn style diff. As Mantapart years back bought ALL GM stock on all Rocketpart stuff, All the W41 engines, All the GMPP performance 2.3L stuff and all stock regarding any of those motors. (which I took to mean all diffs too) This is why they can and do charge whatever they want for that stuff as they own all remaining stock of it.
