  • trans shimming "shift kit" questions....

so i have a tranny that i am going to put into the monte and i just ordered the trans go "shift kit" for fixing known problems.

im looking for more info about shimming the 1-2 and 2-3.

from looking at the ONLY pictures i could find via the search button, brian89gp has some pictures of what to shim but nothing else.

the pictures show the piece taken out of the tranny, and the two pistons out and then the two pistons back in, and then a very close up picture of something and a statement saying , this is where the washers go.

so i am like WTF, that doesnt help much, other than showing me what i need to remove.

i know its ~1/2" of shimming that needs to be done.

so just let me know if i got this right.....

when the take off the accumulator stuff, and remove the to pistons, you will have a spring inside that "bowl", and then you remove the springs, put in washer/shim inside of the "bowl" and put springs on top of the washers and reinstall the pistons????

im using this picture as a reference... http://www.brian89gp.com/images/tran...r/DSCF0072.JPG

and i assume this is the "bowl" where the springs sit, http://www.brian89gp.com/images/tran...r/DSCF0067.JPG

and the washers need to be under the springs

so it would be like this.....

    bowl
    washer/shim
    spring
    piston
    cover

    ??????

also, is this really needed with the trans go kit?

and while i have the tranny apart for the kit and shims, is there anything else i should do while i am in there.

    ??????

by the way, i already have a 4000 stall TC

What the accumulators do is dissipate some of the energy from fluid slamming into a clutch pack. It's basically just a piston and a spring of some weight. When you shim it you want to decrease the amount of energy it can dissipate by reducing how much it can move. So you want to put your washers where it will do that.

im looking more for an answer of YES germ, the way you descibe it is correct

or NO germ, that is not correct, this is the right way......

giving me an answer like that is just like reading the 27 threads about shimming, it doesnt confirm or deny what i am thinking.

but thanks for the reading material.

What, were the words too big? If you've read 27 threads on shimming and you still can't do it, you might want to consider a different hobby.

seriously dude you can consider shutting the fuck up.

no, the words were not confusing, but your answer is not answering my question.

and if you think i should reconsider this hobby, well you can just, well, shut the fuck up again.

if you dont think i know what i am doing....

            take a look asshat

fucking 4 posts and 2 of them are pissing me off.

            wow

well, i just finished putting on the trans go shift kit in my spare tranny yesterday and shimming the accum.

lets just say that not all of the 1-2 accum's are the same.

there is an HD unit and a Standard unit.

the standard unit looks just like the 2-3, but the 1-2 is "flipped" upside down and has different springs install.

              i shimmed the 1-2 to .525" and the 2-3 to .575"

and i did take a few pics along the way and actually shows what it looks like where you put the shims at.

because there are actually a few places you could shim it at, but shimming in those locations could cause blockage.

figured i would update for those that care.

Im going to build the 4t60HD in the TGP. Now to make sure "they" didn't change pistons on me...how does the HD piston look like. Your discriptions a bit murky.

What else is in this kit.

SO its the casting, shim, spring and then the accumulator piston.

the tranny i put it in was crap and came out a couple weeks later.

this "HD" version of the accumulators is basically the same "case" as a non HD unit, however the pistons on the inside are slightly different and one of them is "flipped over"

ill have to take a picture of what im talking about.
