  • transaxle ID plate... where is it?

Just swapped a 5 speed getrag into my Corsica. Supposedly the tranny came out of a v6 Beretta. Not true, come to find out the retta uses a magnetic pickup speed sensor same as every other Gm fwd V6 car ive looked up. This tranny needs a gear driven sensor. I found out the quad's tranny uses a gear driven sensor, as well as Pontiac Fiero's. So my big question is... How can I find out exactly what car my tranny came out of? Cuz its obvious to me it didnt come from a Beretta.

I'm not really sure, but I might have a solution for your problem. My '89 Z24 uses a gear driven sensor that also outputs an electrical signal. The speedometer is mechanical, but the ECM receives the speed electrically. They cost around $35 at Autozone.
The ghost of tomorrow from my favorite dream is telling me to leave it all behind.

are you sure that its not only the automatics that have the magnetic sensor? on my getrag 284, my i.d plate is right on the bottom just a little before the drain bolt, it is riveted on, and up inbetween the 2 top bellhousing bolts there is id numbers there.

My buddys 1990 Z24 is the same. Gear speedo, electric sender for the ECM.

        All depends on the year.

Every 5 speed v6 I looked up used the magnetic sensor. Ill look up that z24 sensor, I think that one was a different one than what I need but ill look it up again just to be sure.
Thanks for the info on those numbers too. Would a dealer be able to look em up and find out what the tranny came out of?

This is the part Advance list's for a 90 Z24
Thats the same kind that came on the tranny but it looks like its for a cable driven speedo.
This is the magnetic pickup sensor I keep finding

I believe this is the one im looking for...

Its been a wild goose chase.

well im not sure on all getrags, but on my 284 the numbers near the 2 bellhousing go, Getrag 284.xxx.xxx.xxx , so mine is easily idenifyable as a getrag 284, and ive never taken out my speed sensor, but the top looks alot like the one you need, you might have a 284, if so, your really lucky.

I thought the 284 was a 4 speed... but I just looked at the transmission section here, and sure enough, the guy that told me that lied... How is the 284 better? Is it tougher? Wish I coulda found out this stuff before my swap...

                284 was a 5spd built behind the 3.4L DOHC

                More "beefier" than the 282

Pretty sure a 284 wouldnt fit in a Corsica .. but dont quote me on that

ok to clear up a few things here

all fwd cars with the th125, 4 and 5 speed trannies (only one im not sure on is the 284) used a gear driven speedo through 92. 93+ used a magnetic pickup. doesnt matter if it had a 1.8l pontiac or a 3.1l, they were all like that. im not sure about the 440t4/4t60 and getrag 284, i beleive they were the same way.

Looks like I have to remove the upper tranny mount bracket to see the numbers on top (royal pita). Ill crawl under it tomorrow if its any warmer and see what the tag on the bottom can tell me.

hmmm, the guy I bought this thing from said it had been bolted to a 3.4...

Thanks to all for the help so far.

'91 and older V6 Cav also used a gear driven VSS for the 5spd transmission.

ALL berettas and corsicas use the magnetic VSS from 87 on. Pretty much the J-Bodies were the ones that used the older parts the longest. You should be able to get the info on where the trans came from off the ID stamped on it which is basically a partial VIN.

If you want to use the gear-driven VSS you will NEED to have your computer chip modified or your speedometer will barely move let alone register the correct speed (been there, done that!)

That VSS you're looking for without the cable connection is used in the sunbird which received the electronic speedometer a few years before the Cavalier.

yeah i went out and checked my getrag 284 and it is definatly the same speed sensor as you are looking for. and the 284 is definatly a 5 speed, and alot better, just hope it doesnt break, there is no replacement parts for it.

Well, that's where the "computer tuning" section comes in handy. You're sure to find someone who will do it for a nominal feel there.
