  • Rebuilt gone great!

Well i took my original 3t40 from my grand am and i overhauled it myself, i replaced all the clutches and steels( borg warner) , seals, bearings, thrust washers, gaskets, tcc lockup silenoid, drive chain, pump shaft, pump rotor, vanes, and pump housing, torque converter, i ripped apart all the valves in the valve bodys, i cleaned them and adjusted them where needed, and cleaned the valve bodys spotless, and i got done installing saturday morning and the car drives perfect, i am so proud of myself, everyone said it couldnt be done unless a pro did it with lots of experience, well ill tell you it works flawlessly, i cant wait till its broken in so i can see how it really performs, lol, i did it in good timing too, i had the tranny completely rebuilt from start to finish in less than 8 hours( not bad for my first time), and i had it changed in roughly 5 hours, ive changed a few trannys before so that wasnt new to me. but you know it would have been faster if the stupid crossover pipe bolts didnt snap off in the exhaust manifold and had to be drilled out. anyways i did good and im proud of myself.(the tranny wouldnt even budge an inch that was it was replaced the first time)

good job. a tranny isnt a big mistery that only a pro can figure out. as long as you can follow a book and understand how it works, it can be done.

most of the time on this board i recomend that people with tranny problems take it to a professional. i do this because if you dont know how it works, and dive into it, it can be a disaster, or the tranny may not have been the problem in the first place.

Yeah, i didnt take any pics i knew i should have, well i might rebuild the other one, and now me and my brother are going to rebuild the 4t60e out of my progect 91 gtp and put it in his car, i will definatly take pics of that, actually i think i have some pics of a 4t60e i ripped apart a year ago if those are any good. and my transmission was definatly the problem it wouldnt shift unless it was to the floor and maxed out in that gear and even then it sometimes wouldnt shift, but this rebuilt works flawlessly. oh and i forgot to mention in the parts i replaced there was a band in there, cant forget that one. lol

I ripped apart my 4t60e two tuesdays ago, I started to clean the gears and what not last tuesday and will do more tonight (I only have class twice a week). This is the first trans I have torn apart, it does not seem that difficult but I am uncertain of what some of the parts are called and how they function. I am going to use a banner kit and just replace the rubber/paper gaskets. All of the frictions still have the original factory writting on them that is clearly written. This is with 187k miles. I guess highway miles are really good on things. The only problem I found was a semi-broken thrust washer that gave the trans alittle endplay.

yeah when you rip them apart they seem so easy, but them when it gets to the assembly it seems really hard, everything starts to look the same. lol

i can do a good job in r/c cars... never tried a real one yet. i was told you need a press for bearings and such. what was the hardest part, other than instanation/removal?

Cost me 99 bucks. The main thing that keeps me from tearing my 4T60E apart is the amount of time it takes me to pull it and re install. These front wheel drives take a bit longer to pull/install than a RWD. Every time I have a tranny go south I think hell Ill rebuild it myself. Then the other side of my brain kicks in and says you better get it done right the first time cause you sure as hell dont want to pull this bitch twice! So I used to take mine to this dude who has a tranny dino thinking this would asure me the fucker was right. Ahh no thanks anymore. I took the last 4t60E to this guy who does them out of a small shed in his back yard. Much cheaper and a hell of a lot more solid feel.

budlight, did you add any aftermarket parts to your trans such as a sonnax surecure kit or a transgo shift kit?

i bought a rebuilt torque converter , it cost me $150 canadian, i think the hardest part was tring to take all the old gasket material off the valve bodies without scoring the valve bodies, that took a few hours alone. the bearings were easy to install i dont have a press at home, so i took a socket the same and punched it in with a hammer, they went in nice and flush. the other hard part was trying to re-assemble, when you have a couple hundred pieces infront of you that all start to look the same it can get confusing, but thanks to my gm dealership manuals it really helped out, so if anybody needs some really nice fully detalied diagrams for a 3t40 , 4t60, 4t60-e ive got amazing ones. and trying to get the cilp off and on the drive axle was kind of a pain.
