  • Is transmission the same?

    Guys,
I checked in the "trans" section first but didn't see what I needed. Can ya'll tell me if the trans out of a '95 Corsica w/OD would be a direct swap from a trans in a 1985 Buick Park Avenue w/OD V-6. The guy's trans went out of his Buick and I have a trans out of the Corsica. I haven't seen the car so I'm assuming it's a 3.0 or 3.8??? He just said a V-6. He didn't want to pay $1,500.00 at the local "Trans" shop when the car isn't even worth that much. I told him I'd install him a used one, just didn't know if mine would work or if I had to find another, thanks for any info.

    RE: Is transmission the same?

I'm guessing you had a typo and meant a 95 Buick Park Avenue... Cause the OD trannies didn't come out until around 89. It would bolt up and all, but the internals might be different. There are usually about 3-4 variations of the trannies in just electronics alone, not to mention all the different sprocket and FDR combinations. I think the biggest difference would be in the FDR, considering the size difference of the 2 cars. It kind of depends on what failed in his tranny. You might be able to swap parts between the 2 and make everything work. Its kinda hard to tell though, really...

actualy, the 4 speed od tranny came out earlier than 89, i just did the re-re on an 85 buick century with a 4 speed.

the 85 car will have a 440t4. your 95 tranny would be a 4t60e. they are the same basic tranny, but the 4t60e is electronicly controlled. the swap would be next to impossible.

Oh, duh... I was thinking the E-trannies, which didn't come out until 89-ish. My bad. So yeah, pretty much a no-go on that.

actualy, the 4t60e became phased in in 92, and by 94, there wernt 4t60/440t4's in anything

91 actually... I knew it was somewhere around that time frame.

              No typo guys,
The guy's car is a 1985 Buick Park Ave. When he first told me the year, I thought it was RWD! Can ya'll give me a range of years to look for this trans? I'm just guessing the larger GM cars would be the same, but I don't know. I told him being frt wheel drive changed up the labor price! Thanks for the help.

the 440t4 was used from 85-94, but not all 4 speeds had the 440t4 after 91, some had the 4t60e.

some key things to look for when finding the 440t4
-440t4 has a vacume modulator, its on the front of the trans (3 speeds dont have mods on them). it also has a kick down cable going from the tb to the trans. the throttle cable is the main differance between a 440t4 and a 4t60e to actualy look at. also, the 440t4 has a square plug by the modulator for lockup. it will have 2, 3, or 4 wires going into it. the 4t60e has a round plug beside the mod with about 10 wires going into it.
