parts were never avalible from gm, the trans had to be sent back to getrag for rebuild. basicly all you can get is axle seals, and front input seal. the parts are hard to come by. unless your rebuilder has core units to use parts from, you are going to have to find a used unit.

btw: no tranny i have seen has reverse syncro. either you have hard part damage or your clutch isnt releasing 100%.

          ok ! :S

Is this possible that that is only the clutch which do that my reverse 'grip ', the first also 'grip' some time, my tranny can be in ' bonne' condition, but only the clutch which creates all badly?

          Thank's

One of the first signs of a failing clutch can be grinding going into reverse.. it could also be a hydrolic problem...

To rule out hydrolics a simple test is to have the car running in nutrual..
Pump the clutch peddle 7 -8 times
Hold the peddle down and wait about 2 sec
Try and put the car in reverse

If it doesn't grind chances are you have either air in the hydrolic system or a failing clutch master cylinder..

If it grinds then its a clutch problem..

Another point to the 284s not being able to be rebuilt locally is that they press for them is considerably stronger and more expensive than the more common 282. In fact, GM mentioned to me that the biggest reason they were no allowing independent companies to do it any more was because they tried using the 282 jigs and when the cases shot out of them (because they failed) people got hurt by 284 parts shooting out at 10,000 psi!

Anyway, YES, you can still get 284s rebuilt. They have to be sent to GM in Michigan and runs about $1000 plus... get this... a $1500 - $2000 core charge depending on where you drop your tranny off.

GM literally wants around $2500 bucks for a "new" 284 tranny. Going to a parts hunter to get a new one consistantly returned quotes running the gambit of $2000 to $2800.

                No question, they are spendy.

Luckily... I have THREE of them! I was setting my my car (an 88 Fiero with the 1991 3.4L TDC/DOHC motor and 284 5-speed) for autocross and knew I would need trannies.

I've decided NOT to race the car afterall and put my two spare trannies up for sale. One is rebuilt BRAND NEW from GM and the other has roughly 10K miles on it.

I just sold one of the trannies (with about 10K miles on it) for just over a grand when all was said and done. A great deal for the buyer.

Depending on where you are, I may be able to put you in touch with a local company that can get your tranny back to GM for rebuilding.

                Good luck!
