  • Is it OK to drive around all the time in 3rd gear

    OK,

My car has 193,000 miles, its a 95 with a 4t60e. Can I run it in D instead of OD from now on? It has/had the TCC shudder but this morning it is doing the 3 speed no check engine light or 4 speed with check engine light dance.

Just wondering other than crummier milage and more engine wear is there a danger to driving the car my regular 37 mile @ 75 mph commute in D vs OD ??

Other than what you already mentioned, I don't see what it would hurt. 4th is an overdrive anyway. Tranny may run a little hotter, but in this weather, I doubt it. -6deg. in Ohio
If you are driving a Chevy, everything else, is just a blur. 3.4 Carbon Footprint.

Its not going to hurt anything, other than gas milage.

driving in 3rd isnt gonna hurt it. gowever, if you have lockup shudder and 4th gear problems, the tranny is comming apart. sounds like the converter clutch is comming out of it, and all that clutch material will end up going through the rest of the tranny. it will eventualy cause you a lot of problems.

what i would recomend is taking your car to a tranny shop and have it loked at. if in fact it is comming apart, if you have it done now opposed to when there are some real serious problems (doesnt move, lost reverse, ect) it could be the difference between a $1000 bill or a $3000 bill.

          hmm

well..for my part..i always run my car in d and not od,cause i found that the car is more responsive and have some compression when releasing the accelerator...when using od(in town),i found it really, slow, like the trans was slipping..and in the kickdown is really slow,.i only use od when im on highway (90 kmh +)..
anyways..i guess my car react like that cause the trans is going down..well i guess..but in town..no od..thats it..
          but on highway..in 4 gear...at almost 3200 rpm..geez..must take alot of gaz!
but beside that..i dont think it hurt.....
