  • What clutch for a 284?

I've got a Z34 buddy asking me what clutch he should get, his stock one is pretty much shot.

The GM replacement kit is like $850 from Lake Chevrolet, and the Centerforce clutch for the 3.4 is also around that price.

But I remember hearing that you can use the 2.8/3.1 centerforce dual friction with the 284, is this true? Would be nice, since it's only like $350. I'm not sure because I know the 284 uses the pull type clutch.

    Thanks.

5speedz34, I assume this is the clutch you got?

What's the quality of the piece like? It probably doesnt even matter, wherever I get it from, they have to be able to ship to Canada.

Autozone also have a clutch for around the same price:

But Cumberland? What kind of brand is that?

Clutch Masters have a good website, but a clutch from them is $570.

We are sorry, but this page cannot be found. If you have any questions or can't find what you are looking for, please contact us .

If I remeber I think it's a power master, or torque master, I know that the advanced website lists parts that there store doesn't carry. But for a stock clutch u shouldnt be spending more than 200.

I would have too, BUT.... my CM pressure plate sucked. The pressure plate came apart on me and ate the end of the starter off and beat the shit out of my bell housing. I have been working with them for a couple months now to get it fixed. They did rebuild it for me (for free)... but the 284 clutch job is not something you want to have to do more than once. Hopefully they took my advice on how to fix the problem and redesigned their kit for the 284. I do have to say they have excellent customer service.

FYI... there is ONE pressure plate made for the 284... all the specialty clutch shops (clutchnet.com, clutchmasters, centerforce, etc) re-arch the stock spring. You can get a stock replacement from perfection hytest (makers of Zoom, Torque Master, Power Torque etc.) for 200-300 bux. It will be the same pressure plate you get from GM and it also includes a Valeo (OEM brand) disc and a new TO bearing. This would be your best bet. I know several people running them and they work well and are economically priced.

So the Perfection Hytest clutch you can get through Parts America is a good set?

Unless you have a set custom made with a re-arched spring, pretty much any kit you get is going to be just as good as the next. I know for a fact the perfection hytest kit includes an OEM brand disc. I didnt have any problems with mine and i haven't heard of anyone else having problems with it.

if your going to go with a 3.1L style heavy duty clutch,
                      id fully recomend www.bullyclutch.com
however the Advertised price from bully is a bit steep,
for a sweet deal on them you can get bully's from www.jbodyperformance.com for a good decent price.
i run a bully stage 2 clutch in my GT.

clutchmasters is also what i'd recomend.
what i hear about centerforce clutches for our cars is not allways possitive. however i do know a few guys who have had good luck with thiers.

You cant use a 3.1 clutch kit as the input shaft on the 284 is a different diameter and spline count which means the disc will not fit. The disc is also smaller in diameter which will limit the holding power. The 284 also uses a pull type clutch (like some of the vettes and F body cars). you cannot use a push type kit like the 3.1/282 use. The only thing that is the same between the 3.4DOHC and the 2.8/3.1 is the flywheel diameter and pressure plate bolt pattern. You have to use a 284 clutch kit with the 284! Break in is VERY important. This is the reason some people have great luck with a certain clutch and others dont. Kevlar (used in many stage 2 and 3 kits) is particularly bad about this. My clutch wouldnt grab hard enough to chirp the tires from a stand still untill it had about 300 miles on it. Now it will chirp them going into 3rd. Make sure you take it easy for the first 500 miles your you can glaze the disc and it wont ever hold like it should.
