  • 3.4 dohc conversion

well...im sorry if it as been told before, but i didnt find anything on it in the search,so here it goes..

im planning on rebuilding my 3.4 dohc engine and in the same time, make a auto to manual trans swap...
my car is a 1991 cutlass supreme international,3.4dohc...

i guess the best would be to find a cutlass that his already manual and take those piece ,but what year-model should i try to find?is there any actually???
    otherwise..any suggestion???
from what i have read in the forum, the 284 should be the best?
    anyways..any help-info greatly appreciated...
    tks!
    i want this baby manual!

    RE: 3.4 dohc conversion

the 284 is what gm put behind the dohc motor. they are a pretty strong tranny, but getting a bit hard to find and parts are not avalible if you break it.

the best bet would be to find another cutlass to strip. if you cant find one, and w body should work for most of the parts (pedal assembly, slave, master, trans, axles, ext), but you will need to mod your center console or get the proper one from a cutlass.

have a look at the swap info in the trans section of the page (click on the 284 link)

The Getrag 284 Manual Transaxle was available in 1991-1993 (I heard the 93s are rarest) ..
      Your best bet would be:

      Chevy Lumina Z-34s (best bet)
Pontiac Grand Prix GTPs (and some SE models)

And although the Cutlass did come in manuals too ..
And some 500 made Chrysler LeBaron Maseratis (sp?) had them.
The 284 is a beefier version of the Getrag 282. And since production was limited to 3 years, you might consider sourcing something else. I though I recalled they slapped the 282 in 88-90(?) W-Bodys also.

Maybe research on how Fiero guys use the 282 to "beef" it up to handle the power.

The 284 was a "pull" clutch, while the 282 was a "push" .. However, dont let some guy on here (forgot who) tell you how crappy it will be .. They are both "fluid" and hydraulic ..

      Hope something here helps.

          RE: ?

now a 282 will bolt right up to the dohc motor. its not as strong as a 282 (in theory) but ive heard of guys putting them behind l67's with tons of power. even fiero v8 conversions use the 282 and dont blow them up. a 282 would likely hold up just fine behind a dohc.

you would need to find a 2.8 or 3.1l donor car for it. you would need to use a 3.1l clutch, but im not sure on the flywheel. i think a 3.1l flywheel would work, but a 2nd opinion would be great on this.

              k

so...i can put a 282 in there hen...is the gear ratio of the 282 and the 284 is the same?
and then, what year i should look into to find a donor car??(ie 88-90 cutlass 3.1) or something similar...
              and if the 282 is a push and the 284 is a pull..can i use,let say,the whole assembly(pedal assembly,hydraulics etc) from a 3.1 282 on a 284?or it have a difference?
cause dohc 3.4 manual are really rare here..so ill have to get one from a 3.1...so i need to know if i ever find a 284...will it work with the 282 stuff.(pedal assembly etc...)..

im not a big racer,so i guess a 282 could work for now...without breaking in piece the 1st time i put pedal on the floor...

tks for info guys....cant wait to transform my baby..
              really appreciated guys!
