  • getrag 282 throwout bearing

A short background to explain a few things first. My auto tranny commited suicide, so im swapping in a 5 speed getrag. Got the tranny and im currently working on getting all the other parts. But I ran into a slight dilema.
This is the inside of the bellhousing.

You can see the throwout arm and the input shaft. I dont have the t-o bearing yet, its in the clutch kit I ordered thats supposedly on its way. What I need to know, is if theres a plate that the t-o bearing mounts to that goes on that arm? Or if the bearing just attaches right to it?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    RE: getrag 282 throwout bearing

the bearing is already installed on a retainer, so just slide it on.

while its out, inspect the fork and make sure its not worn. they are notorious for wearing out and can cause problems with the pedal hight.

Agreed. During any service periods the arm should be greased.

Lloyd had to have the whole arm assembly replaced. It actuall broke in half.

Thats what happens when a FORD dealership services it I guess.

How do I get the damn thing out? I messed around with it for a while and couldnt figure it out. Whats the secret?
Oh and should I get new bushings for it?

A littlle off topic but I cant figure out how to grease the shift cables either. Anyone got any suggestions?

the arm doesn't use bushings, there are actually bearings on each end of the arm. when i bought my used Getrag 282 last year the arm was fubar....the part that the TO bearing rides on was all twisted up. IIRC i got an arm from CarQuest and had to get a new outer bearing from the GM dealership. i know i have the info on a post @ w-body.com, but the site is down right now :? the bearings were about $55 each and the arm was around $100. when w-body.com gets back up and running i will post a link to that thread (part #s included)

it's kinda hard to explain how the TO bearing is installed without showing you in person, but it only goes on one way. you'll figure it out...

            good luck
