  • 4T60e transmission rebuild

First transmission rebuild for me. Im trying to determine if pieces are good or worn and in need of replacement.

All of the hardened parts to the oil pump look good to me except for the aluminum cover. That has significant scaring and I think it should be replaced. To me, the wings looked ok. Is this common wear for the oil pump and can I get that piece, am unable to find at parts store on the web.
All the fine screens in valve body were clean with no metal flakes found.
I may not know some of the correct terminology.
On one of the "fourth clutch plates" a slight ring on pad the steel plate has a chip imbedded in surface causing the ring on other pad. Doesn't appear to be worn just discolored. Looks like a minor flaw from the factory? Not sure if this needs replaced.
The 1-2 and 3-4 servo...the valve stem has slight visual wear but can't feel edges or burr similar to the oil pump wings. Should I replace stem?

      RE: 4T60e transmission rebuild

Why not just do a complete rebuild? Replace everything, parts arent that much

Since I kinda know how this transmission runs.....No gear slips just not engaging into first after down shifting at a stop sign until the engine revs too high. I assume that would be in the valve body or in the 1-2 servo not in the clutches "transaxle". Correct me if I'm wrong....I certainly don't know half the names of the parts.
Don't want a new transmission just want it working better (engaging). I can take it somewhere and spend $1000 to 2500 or quench my thirst for knowledge and peice of mind that I can accomplish a task.
So I am asking for help, here. I would like to know if somebody ( that has experience ) could accurately describe a wear pattern in detail for these symtoms or for the the involved parts.
Thanks, in advance for any future help.

sometimes first gear not engaging untill the rpms are higher is a torque convertor problem
this even happens when you get low enough on fluid in my the delta 88 at least

Is it possible that, after seeing the scaring on the oil pump, that pressure would reduced plus the possible wear on 1-2 servo, slightly sticking, that the combination of the two could be root cause of failure? The tolerances of the shaft just seem that it isn't moving freely be hand, if there is pressure behind it when it shifts would that movement be hindered? Also I need a diagram where the ball bearing go if anybody has that.
            Thanks

You are in over your head...

Sounds like you have more of a valve body problem.. A commen problem on 60e's is for the valve to wear out the valve body bore causing cross leaks... Sonex sells over size vavles and the kits to ream out the valve body bore but they about $80 a valve..

Worn out servo pistons wont cause a down shift problem...

A torque converter problem has nothing to do with shifting, also gm fwd converters hardley ever develope problems..

Hey, there has been thousands and thousands of "mechanics" there too; they throw parts at it...strip bolts/studs...over-tighten...etc.

ive worked as a transmission re/re guy for almost 4 years now, and ive even built a few 4l60e, as well as coring out a lot of various units, and i still wouldnt touch a 4t60e as far as building it. the 440t4/4t60 was once known as the hardest tranny to build, and hardest unit to get working correctly. now it got a bit easier when the 440t4 evolved into the 4t60e, however its still one of the more complex and dificult trannys to build.

imho, you are probly in over your head, however you have it apart so realy you have nothing to lose. if you cant get it to work properly, you can always take it to a transmission shop or get a used unit and put it in.
