  • '97 4t60E in place of '95 4t60E

    Hey, how its going?

I've got a 1995 Grand Am, 3100 with the 4t60E. The tranny has 172,xxx and the OD is giving out. I've read up on the board about this issue... However, I have a complete 4T60E (with CV Joints) out of a 1997 Grand Am, with the 2.4L. Will this swap work out ok? I found the chart at http://www.60degreev6.com/hlperf/60V...iles/4T60E.htm

I don't know the VIN of the 2.4, but I can find out. Let me know of any thoughts... Just want to make sure this will work out ok before I start! Thanks!

The 2.4L GAs came with 4T60Es? I find that hard to imagine...

It has the 4T60E, plus I just looked on the title, it has a VIN letter T.

yes, the 96-98 automatic grand ams are 4t60-e's. 4 and 6 banger. always made me wonder why a 96-98 2.4 5 speed wont work on the 3100.

the only thing i would thing that could be different is the wiring since its an obd2 tranny going in an obd1 car.

          Jeff-
I might be wrong...but I think some 95's had the OB2, because I'm fairly sure mine an OB2. About a year ago I put in a '99 3100 in my '95, and had no problems with the computer.

I did notice that the 2.4 4T60E has a lower final drive ratio. I don't see that causing any problems... only thing I wasn't sure about was the Torque Converter K-factor seemed much higher on the 2.4. What exacly is the K-Factor?

          Thanks!

The 'K' factor is an engineering term that means the speed of one member divided by the square root of the torque on the same member. This is calculated at stall conditions. On a 298 mm torque converter you can multiply the "K" factor by 14.2574 to get the stall speed.

            Ok .. I was just guessing ..

Because they make different cases for each application. Unless it has a removable bellhousing you cannot swap trannies from a 2.4L to a 60*V6 or vise-versa. Also the final drive are different between the 2 trannies so your speedo will be off. But that is of little concern since it is easy to fix.

the only difference in the torque converter is the stall speed.. which isnt a problem in this case.. a 2.4L has a higher stall speed.. this just meens he would have more juice off the line..
