  • 4T60e-4T60 swap

I just recently bought a 92 Grand Prix and shortly thereafter lost all the forward gears except 1st. Right now it will max at 20mph and thats it. I think that this has the 4t60e in it (correct me if I am wrong). The GP has a 3.4 in it so I guess my question is can I swap a 4t60 in for the 4t60e without a huge hassel. I was not sure it would work since it was from different motors. Thanks for any help in advance and sorry if this question has been asked before. (The search didn't yield any help.)

yeah the 3.4L came with the 4T60-E and the others came with the 4T60 (THM440)...although i don't know why you would want to downgrade the trans. if you lost all forward gears then just get the trans rebuilt or go to a junkyard and pick up a used OBD1 4T60-E.

I see what you are saying, I guess I'll try to find an 'e' model then and not worry about it. Thanks for the help guys.

and if you do rebuild there are some options for you. like the differential for a 4T65-E is interchangelable with a 4T60-E. and some of the clutches that raybestos makes for the 4T65-E HD can be used on the 4T60-E. so if you want a tougher trans there are options out there...not to mention higher stall converters.

i see nothing constructive about this post. i never said the 65 had a stronger differential...i said they were interchangeable.

If the 4T65-E HD diff sucks so bad, how come they're used in modified 11/12 second cars(we're talking 1/4 mile here of course..Also, I believe ZZP uses a stock one in their 10 second car).

For longevity my shop doesn't see the 65e diffs last... We see a lot let go around the 160,000km mark... Where as 4T60 diffs usualy out last the life of a couple transmission rebuilds..

If you are looking for a cheeper solution then an HD diff you can put a 4T60 diff in a 65E...

My shop has done this with all Taxi cabs we do and the number of comebacks with blow up diffs has dropped dramaticaly..
