  • pan gasket heads up

Against my better judgement, I installed a CORK gasket that was included with a new trans fluid filter into my malibu about a year ago. the gasket has allready failed and is leaking, so i have to pull the pan and replace the gasket after only a year. that sucks. However, NAPA does sell a much higher quality RUBBER gasket for only about 7 bucks. I would recommend this gasket for a filter change. My local dealer wanted about 40 bucks for the oem part!

I hope this saves someone a little bit of hassle sometime!

by 97, all gm fwd trannys had reuseable pan gaskets, and you should not use a cork pan gasket instead, as the pan is designed for the reuseable gasket. anything else you will put on will leak.

ive run across this at work. a 10 minute oil change does a trans service and throws the $75 reusable gasket away and puts a cork one on, then the guy comes in with a tranny leak a month later. the way we fix it is to use silicone instead of a gasket, as it will seal just as well.
