  • High Stall Torque Converter

I recently had a torque converter fail out on me. I did a little searching around, and found an engine place back home that said they could hook me up with a high stall converter for the 4t60-e in my 1992 lumina euro 3.4

Who else here has a high stall torque converter?

What will the higher stall do for my car?

Not sure if this is right or not, but i was told that the standard luminas came with about a 1500 stall. Mine came with about a 1800 stall. And the one that I ordered is something like a 2500-2700 stall.

Reason i'm asking this is because i've searched on www.clubgp.com, here, www.gmforums.com, and efi-street before it shut down. I found nothing on high stall torque converters.

Any information is appriciated. I plan too install this with the help of my mechanic this coming weekend.

    Thanks, Kevin

How high is the stall? Most likely they're just getting you a torque converter out of a 4-cylinder car (which is like 2700 RPM instead of the regular 1800?)

No, cause if that's the case, i'm under the assumption that using a 4 cylinder one wouldn't work. cause i called up the local performance tranny shop, and they said that anything would work as long as you didn't use a 4 cyl. converter. I guess if it's not right, i'll just grab a normal stall one that they keep in stock.

      Any other opinions.....

Protorque has a highstall converter for the 4t60-e. I think it was around 2800-3100 rpm stall depending on the input torque.

You may want to think about a tranny cooler. Higher stall convertors like to generate extra heat.

All 91-93 DOHC powered cars had an external tranny cooler stock.

Really? Makes me kind of wonder why GM quite making them...... Aside from the computer issues, sounds like a perfect match for my swap project.

i dont believe that a 4t60e came on a 4 cyl but i think that the 440 and maybe the 125 converter are the same so thats what they are probably using and ive never heard that usuing a 4 cyl converter in the v6 trans wont work also it could be a caddy convert i dont know the stall but bigger engine bigger car might get higher stall

If you match the stall converter to where your engine puts out a decent amount of torque then you will increase your take off speed. So basically your just letting your engine rev up quickly to where it puts out a lot of torque then your converter will grab and send all (well...most) of the power though your transmission.

                    High Stall Torque Convertor

so what did you end up doing with your convertor?
I have mine in a the shop being rebuilt as we speak. From the code on it we determined that it had a stall speed of 2095. Code G. I know there is a list around here somewhere, but i can't find it. Anyone know?

Anyway, i am having a custom one built, stall speed 2500+. Nothing to radical but should get off the line a bit better. Kevlar material they are using in the current sports cars they started using around 2000. So it should last alot longer too

                      RE: High Stall Torque Convertor

for gm fwd performance stuff, we use an off the shelf converter. gm had one that was 2950 stall from the factory. i cant remember the aplication. being the 125, 440t4, 4t60e, 4t65e 4t40e and 4t45e all use the same style converter (all of them from out supplier are labled 125-x) any converter can be interchanged into any other of those units. doesnt matter if its a 4cyl or 6 cyl, all thats different is the stall.

Here is a list of the Torque Converter suffix codes.

                          A- 2795 rpm
                          K- 2760 rpm
                          B- 2560 rpm
                          C- 2385 rpm
                          Z- 2375 rpm
                          G- 2095 rpm

As far as we can tell, all converters will work in all trans.
And the '98 + 4 cyl converter will yield ~3000 rpm behind a healthy V6.

If anyone has further info, please correct this.
                          Thanx

i've got a FA** 2795 stall gm torgue converter PLUS version, has better bearings woven carbon fiber ect.. heavy duty highest stall i could get without spending the extra 150 bucks to go custom.
                            i also have a 3.73 fdr...
honestly there isnt a huge difference the transmission has several other mods done to it and shifts firm.
i havnt stepped on it to test the launch yet becuase im still tuning my pcm
also with no vss adjsutment as of yet
if you want mega stall where your car sounds like a standard on take off, you'll need a sommin like 3500 stall lol
and you will feel the "slip" at lower rpm

basicly if you want a crazy off road drag strip feel that you will deffintaly have to go with a custom torque converter
the gm FA*B is a stock replacement with a stall of 2795, decent, drivable, yet takes advantage of the higher rpm areas where the torque of the motor is at :P

Ok, got my engine back in with the new torque converter, a local shop here does a great job. He did a custome TC for me and raised my stall to around 2500 from teh stock 1850. Plus all the better weave. Let me tell you, pins you into your seat now. Now if i can get 6 good injectors instead of 3 good ones, two slightly off and one putting out half the fuel, I might see what the car is capable off.
