Will 88 Beretta GT TRANNY fit 87 Cav Z24 ? both have/had 2.8

sorry to ask a question if its already been asked, but im new here and its hard for me to get around but i really need to know this...

i have an 88 beretta GT with a 2.8, and i need to know if the transmisson will fit in an 87 Cavy Z24 that PREVIOUSLY had a 2.8 with trans.

How can i tell what kind of transmission i have without taking it out. Can i tell anything from the VIN#?

assuming we are talking auto trans here

i know that the only trans in a j body 82-94 was a th 125 (later renamed 3t40), and im sure all 2.8l berettas had the 125 as well, but you should check. look at the shifter. if it says p-r-n-d-2-1 its a th125, if it says p-r-n-od-d-2-1 or anything with od, then its not a 125, and will not be a direct swap into a jbody. im pretty sure (99%) it will have a th125 in the betetta.

they are the same tranny, same mounting and all. it will be a direct swap if the beretta is a 3 speed.


asuming 5 speeds

if they are both 2.8l, they will be a getrag hm282. however, the beretta uses a long extention housing on the passenger side, and will not bolt right in. in this case, you will need to take the extention housing off and see if it looks like the cavy tranny on that side. if it does, you will need to throw an axle seal into the case and will be good to go. if not, you would need to build the beretta tranny into the cavalier case. im not sure on the extention housing thing though, ive never had one off to look at it.

Berettas were TH125s (3T40s) up until 94 when they went to the 3100/4T60E combo.

Sorry to post in two sections again. It actually happened on accident kind of. I was searching on Google and it sent me directly to the "engine swap" section on the page and i though "oh im swaping engines, this place is perfect" , then after posting i found the trasmission section then though "im swaping engines, but my questions was REALLY about the tranny so this is EVEN BETTER.." plus ive never been to this site and i dont know the usual response time for a post. And I am in a hurry to get the answer cause ive been trying to find out for days now and NOBODY can give me a for sure answer. And ill prolly be taking my engine out this week.

& YES the beretta is an AUTOMATIC and the Z24 was too.

So..... so far.. since both cars are automatic... and made just a year apart, they should have the same TH125 AUTO tranny and should be a direct swap and bolt right in right. Ill trust you gusy with my life here then . Afterall.. "the internet never lies" right...... hahahahahh

ALSO... i will be swapping to a 3.1 since hes taking my 2.8. I know they are pretty much exactly the same thing just a longer stroke for more displacement for 10HP more. Would this be the SAME TRASMISSION OR NO?? I have not gone to get my 3.1 yet, so i dont know what car its from or anything like that.... I guess ill have to wait to get it before i start asking questions huh

Also, the little snag if run into is how to tell id i have TH125 or TH125C?
Im guessing the 3T40 is the MANUAL tranny ??

3T40 is still the 125.. .The name was just changed in later years.. Yes the transmissions will be the same and bolt up no problem.. The only thing you have to really watch out for is the plugs for the lock up soliniod.. Check and make sure they are the same.. If not take off the side pan and switch the plug from your old transmission to the new one..
