  • Removing 282, 3.1, L body -just a few ??

Pulling the trans out. I want to leave the intermediate shaft attached to the trans, so that means seperating it on the passenger side of the vehicle. Any idea what holds it in? I havent taken a look yet (car is about 60 miles away right now), so I'm just looking for a heads up. The intermediate shaft has no housing around it, but I'm guessing it has to have a mount of some kind on the passenger side of car, and then the axle snaps in to it. So axles are easy enough to remove, done that plenty of times, but whats holding the shaft on the passenger side? (is there a mount with a bearing? considering theres no housing on the shaft and since it spins, I figure a bearing and mount are necessary)

    thanks all!

The intermediate shaft (At least in my '93 J body) is hanging in a bearing with a bracket that bolts to the backside of the block at the rear engine mount. Just remove the halfshaft, unbolt the hangar, and pull the intermediate shaft out.

However, when I removed my trans to change the clutch a year and a half ago, I didn't even pull the intermediate shaft out of the car... just popped the drivers side driveaxle out, then pulled the trans away from the intermediate shaft. (leaving it hanging in the bearing) Getting it lined back up during reassembly was a bit of a bitch, but that's how it goes.

exactly why I want it to stay in the trans end.

Heres a question... If a throw out bearing is bad would it knock in neutral (clutch engaged) all the time? Mine doesnt knock at first, but give it 2 or 3 minutes and it starts to knock in nuetral, press the clutch knock gone. Either way I'm sure its crappin out, as pedal effort is high.

I always thought the throwout bearing was bad if it made noise with the clutch pedal depressed....

I guess it could be either way. When the TO went bad in my fathers maxima (hes the kinda guy that stays in gear at stop lights) it would chatter loud in neutral with the clutch engaged and pedal effort increased considerably -same as my beretta is doing.
