  • 3 transmission problems with 1994 grand prix

car in question is a 1994 grand prix, 3.1, with about 118000 miles

    1) ive been having a problem for a long time where the torque lockup will not engauge. sometimes it will but it will turn on and off very rapidly, sometimes it will engauge in 3rd. it never works when im on the highway, the fastest ive had it running was till about 65mph then when i apply a little extra gas it will turn off.

    2) also, about a week ago ive noticed that in the morning when i go to shift into reverse i can hear a quick grinding noise when the transmission goes into reverse. it will go away when the car heats up.

    3) for a while now it seems that my car is shifting from 1st to second very rougly. when its in second gear at about 25-30mph, and i accelerate hard it will downshift to 1st then when it shifts to second it shifts VERY hard, sometimes hard enough to break the wheels loose. this doesnt only happen when im driving it hard, it will happen (not as bad but still shifts hard ) when im just driving normally.

please if anybody know anything about these problems, how to fix them, links, or costs on how much itll be...id greatly appreciate it.

dont know if it might be the cause of the hard shifting.

Id check your vacuum modulator first. Tis that can thing on the front of the trans with the metal vacuum line comming out of it. Remove it and have the unit facing down wit ht he vacuum finnt on the bottom. if trans fluid comes out, get a repalcement one. Autozone or AdvanceAuto should have it. its smaller and adjustable, you can taylor your shifting. Whent he modulator dies it caused max pressure shifitng, also can make th epump noisey, alsmot a grinding noise, esspecailly when cold.As far as your TCC, that's harder. It might be the valves sticking. Or the soleniod is grounded out. Those TCC soleniods in '94-'95 are problematic.....

Other than hard shifting, and some loss of ATF since the engine will pull the fluid past the modulator and burn it.
