I was coasting at a slow speed and the car went to downshift from 2nd to 1st, and when it did it made a grinding noise and now I dont have 1st or 4th gear. It wont go into 1st or 4th and the 2-3 shift is slow. The torque converter wont lock up either. When idling in park I hear stuff rolling around. I was thinking the 1-2 shift spring was going bad anyway, but that wont explain it not going into 4th. Any help? Lorenzo?

I have about 5% of reverse. It'll go in, barely, then if Im on flat ground I'll slowly go backwards while on the gas pretty good. That band (1st, 4th, Rev) has to be shot. Anyone know how much for a shop to fix?Robby Whitesell

Well I'd say the input sprag might be shot. Kinda hard for those to go but it would explain why you don't have reverse or 1st, espceailly since you had a loud grinding sound.. lock up should engage since you are getting into 3rd. The circuit may be blocked off by debris caugt in the solenoid filter. The 1-2 band is strong. if it died you woundn't have 2nd. You can drive it since its fuckoked already, it wont get much worse. It'll just wear alittle more since your fluid is now conaminated.. Sorry I haven't responded sooner.Lorenzo

I know you got a 4T60 and I got a E but this is exactally what happened to my 95. A clutch pack drum sheared the teethe off. I called a guy and he told me strait up this is what was wrong. He said its the same part that fails in both models. In fact keeps them in stock on the shelf since its a pretty common problem. Unfortunatly you got to tear it apart. I had rebuilt conventional trannies like the Turbo 350 but had never had a front wheel drive tranny apart so I had this guy do it for me. Charged $450 while I watched. I think I would tackle it next time myself.2004 Grand Am GT 3400 ... I had the right to remain silent, I just didn't have the ability.(Ron White)

Yeah the 2nd clutch drum and input planetary carrier can wear the Stove Pipe pretty well. The aftermarket part is now hardened.
True, if the reaction sun was diasabled there would be still foward motion now that I think of it...But that really doesn't explain the loss of 4th and Reverse. And yeah I've taken of these transmissions apart amoungst others more than I care to remember.Lorenzo
