  • Removing 4t60

The 92 Euro's tranny is going, it's slipping occasionally, not going into gear occasionally... it's dying. It has something like 145k miles. I just wanted to know the procedure on taking the tranny out. 92 Euro 3.1 with (I think) 4t60. It's the original tranny so I'm assuming it's not -e.

Support the engine, drop the subframe, unhook hoses and wires, unhook the axles, support the tranny, unbolt the passenger side bracket, unbolt the torque converter, unbolt the tranny from the engine, and pull it down and out through the side.

How about step by step instructions then if there is more than that. My tranny IS gone in my STE and I would like to know what i need to do too.

i suggest pulling the whole engine/tranny assy using a hoist and seperating them outside of the car.

Yes, I would suggest that too. Its not much more work, and it will be a helluva lot easier when it comes time to put it all back together. Just don't do like me, and forget where half the damn bolts go.

              remove air cleaner box
remove 4 13mm nuts holding the cross over pipe for the exaughst - carefully remove it.. if the transmission isn't a 60E, you'll have the tv cable in the way.. you can remove the tv cable first but its hard to get at the 10mm bolt that holds it to the transmission..
To remove the tv cable you need to disconnect it from the throttle linkage first, then unbolt the 10mm bolt and pull the cable up and release it from the hook
undo wiring harness at the front of the transmission
remove vacume line from the shift mod
unclip the linkage from the transmission
remove 2 13mm bolt holding the shifter cable and braket to the transmission
remove 4 18mm bell housing bolts - 2 of them might be studds with a 15mm nut on them and ground wires attatched
support the motor - we use and engine hanger and chains tied to both brakets on the motor used for lifting it..
              raise the car up
              take the wheels off
              drain the pan
remove cotter pins from ball joints
remove ball join nuts - you can use a pickle for to free the ball joints from the lower control arm, I ususaly wait till I am lowering the frame down and just hit the lower control arm with a hammer
undo 15mm nuts holding the transmission mount on the drivers side to the frame
undo 15mm nuts holding the motor mount on the passengers side to the frame
undo 3 10mm bolts holding brackets for the power steering line that is mounted on the frame - 2 on the front 1 on the passengers side on the insde of the frame
remove 2 bolts holding the power steering rack to the frame - 15mm bolts, 18mm nuts - some times its helpfull to loosen off the back to frame bolts and get the frame to lower down a bit
life the power steering rack up off the fame a little and tie it up
support the frame and remove the 4 15mm frame bolts
lower the frame down slowely - make sure nothing is still attatched to it, you'll probley have to pope the steering loose from the frame as it comes down...
pop the axles loose from the transmission.. I usualy pry between the inner cv and the transmission on the drivers side.. and use a hammer on the inner cv on the passengers side to knock them loose
remove the 10mm bolts for the flywheel inspection cover - there will be either 3 or 4 of them depending if the cover has 2 pieces or just 1..
remove 3 fly wheel to torque converter bolts - 18mm head, used something to hold the crank still when breaking the bolts loose
remove the bracket on the passengers side that bolts to the block- 4 13mm bolts( I believe, if not there will be 5 bolts )
              disconnect the speedo
remove either the 10mm or 13mm bolt holding the dipsitck tube to the back of the transmission, remove the dipstick tube
remove the cooler lines - 1/2 flare nut wrench
              support the transmission
remove last 2 bell housing bolts - one at the back of the motor with the head facing the passengers side, you'll need a long extention to reach over the top of the transmission to get at it with an 18mm socket.. the one at the front will be an 18mm stud with a 15mm nut on it and some ground wires..
pry the transmission from the engine and lower it down making sure nothing is still attatched or it gets caught on anything...

If there are any inconsistancies I appologize it's been a while since I have been under an older lumina, plus I wrote this over a peirod of 2 hours with a couple dozen interuptions... either way any full frame fwd gm is pulled in a similar mannor..

                  I love you.

Hahaha, thank you very much. I've never pulled a tranny, but with my dad and my old auto tech teacher (50 years of auto experience, he changed his first oil by himself (with dad's help getting the filter off) at age 6) at my side, it shouldn't be too bad.

have fun dude.. you'll need the experience and the extra hands.. I suggest investing in some impact flex sockets if you are going to do it.. they are my life savoir.. lol. Pulling the transmission isn't to hard.. on a scale of 1 - 10 I'd rathe the job a 6... just cause it's a full frame drop and you have to hang the motor in the car..
