  • 4T60-E Differences....

Ok, so a friend of mine has a 3400 in his Z26, and the car has went through TWO 4T60-Es first one being the original 2.97? and the second being a 3.33

For the next one i suggested the one from the DOHC (being a little heavier duty), BUT one thing i need to know is what years of transmissions interchange?

The car is a 1994... Can the trans used be any 91-97 transmission?

There are 4 different internal variations of the 4T60Es. Let's see if I can remember what they are...

Ok, I can't find the diagrams that I remember seeing the 4, but here is some info I found (from a 1991 ASTG rebuild manual):

Buick and Cadillac trannies used a PWM solenoid, while Chevrolet trannies used a 4th CL Discrete and LO Discrete switches. This changes what pins are what on the connector. I remember that other differences were also temp or pressure switches, depending on the models.

hmm... it seems hard to find some of this info.... I found some fairly good info here-

but it's kinda dated and doesn't go over anything newer than 95 really....

it does however specifically say that 3.4s don't have a PWM solenoid.... Anyone know if a stock 94 Beretta does? (you got a factory service manual Brad?)

Yeah, my tranny uses the PWM solenoid. I think I remember where I saw the diagrams now... time to go see if I can actually find it!

Hmm... so I was wrong. I'll have to look through my manuals again to see what I can find. I have my 94 Beretta service manual, as well as a 4T60-E Technician's Manual, a 4T60-E Electronics Manual and the 4T60-E ATSG Rebuild Manual.

awesome info!! I need to verify which one I have, and see if the w-body ecm will even control it. Thanks!

You need a 16149396 ECM to be able to control the 4T60-E. The '4396 ECM is identical to the 7727/7730 ECMs except that it has an additional 256k of RAM dedicated to the tranny controls.

I mean the w-body (16149396) ecm controlling a 4T60E from another platform, like the A body.

Hrmmm... so what year DOHC tranny would match up the best to the 94 Beretta's ECM? (do they change in 96-97 at all?)

Anyone know what would happen if you used a non-PWM trans in a car that expects the PWM?

OR - can the PWM and related electronics be switched over?

Oh - and what do "CLW" "PCW" "PHW and "CMW" mean (some ID tag on the trans?)

I was running my 4T60-E off of a 91 DOHC '9396 ECM without any issues that I remember. Well, I don't think I had OD (which was odd), but it might have been because we never messed with the code for the tranny. I might still have all the pin numbering I used to go between the ECM and the stock 94 wiring if that would help.

Well, the only change will be the trans, but still using the original ECM... if you have any info on that, it would be great...

is there any better year trans to get?

unfortunately my trans connector doesnt match any of the diagrams above. I have:

                              A- Lt green
                              B- yel/black
