282 vs 284 in Fiero

Hey yall.

Well I am seriously considering moving to a Fiero paltform, and just swapping the 3.4 DOHC. In fact we have found a 1988 Fiero GT 5-speed, and I hope to buy it within the month. Here is my main concern.

I am worried about whether the Fiero 282 can handle the power I want to give to it. So I'd rather use my 284. On the outside, do the 282 and the 284 have the same case and external dimensions? Also are the axle inputs the same?

The 284 is much larger than the 282. There have been SBC Fiero conversions that still use the 282, so not sure why you're worried about it.

Ok. If it was the same size on the outside, I would've just liked to use that, just to be safe. But now I guess I'll be using the 282. From what I hear this is an easy swap.

This is what will happen to my Zs.

Rebuild the red car's motor, it, along with the red car's 284, go into the white car. The white car's 284 gos for sale with a bad 2nd gear synchro. The white cars motor, along with the new intake, go to the Fiero. The red car's ENTIRE computer goes into the Fiero. Then the red car gets parted out. Shouldn't be hard to get rid of, it is in PERFECT condition.

I might be getting a 88 fiero gt in the next few weeks here and doing a 3.4 swap as well. Pennock's forum has been really helpful. I saw this 88 gt with LOTS of miles on it but the interior looked beautiful. Were you working on a different uim for the 3.4? If so how are things coming? There's alot of stuff I want to do to the 3.4 motor before it goes in so I am hoping the orig 2.8 engine can last for a while.

Yah I have most the parts I need and will be building it voer X-mas, and insatlling it. 6 independent throttle bodies, each 48mm. A 4 in runner below the throttle bodies, that tapers from 2in to 1.75". I will also be putting on P&P heads, but thats in the distant future, after the 3.4 is in the Fiero. My 2.8 will be in it for a day, just long enough for me to get it to the track and run a 18(altitude), and then sell it.

One day soon I'd also like to get a 3.4 into a Fiero, I'm not to sure as to the years of Fieros and their body styles/suspension/etc. I haven't really started researching, but what year is the best year for the swap? And which year is it that looks most like a hatchback? (the year that reminds me most of a porsche)...

But semi-off topic, do you know how much it is to rebuild a 284? I've decided after noticing some of my driving habits, or i should say, my road rage that causes me to spin my tires, i think she might need it.

1988 is the best and it is the one that looks liek a hatchback form the side. It was the last year, with lotus suspension. But they can be kinda pricey sometimes.

None of them look like a hatchback. 1986 - 88 GT Fastbacks are what you're thinking of. The other models are notchbacks and really... unattractive. I test drove an 88 GT 5 speed fastback last weekend, and it was amazing. I almost bought it, but it needed too much work (was selling for $1200).

I'm going to talk to a guy tomorrow about working on a tubular intake for my Z.

FROM A SIDE VIEW, the 86-88 Fiero GTs look a lot like hatchbacks.

Alright thanks, I mentioned the idea of me buying a Fiero tonight and instantly i had about 6 people begging me to buy it. Your both right the 86-88 GT's were the ones i was thinking of. I was thinking if i could find a notchback for less than 1000 cdn i might consider, but they don't appeal to me.

Soo looks like I've killed the plans for the Z for now (the big ones, it'll still get intake,tune-ups etc., but no rims) and ill buy the Fiero in spring, Then over the course of a year (hopefully) i'll slowly drop a 3.4(TDC) in there and hopefully run 13-14's. Ever since i was in elementary school, i'd pass a fiero on the way and i'd always wanted that car, i loved it, i thought it was a Ferrari actually until my mom of all people informed me otherwise. (this is like a grade 2 memory here).

But who knows, maybe in the course of saving ill change my mind again...

Oh I just saw your question on rebuilding the 284. I've heard US$1600 + shipping. Probably looking at close to US$2000. Pretty much the same as a new one after core charge.

I was told that the 284 is physically TOO big for a Fiero... that it won't fit.

At least you came to your senses and decided to not put that intake you are working on into a 3400#+ car!

Nice to see fiero info getting around outside Pennocks.

Aaron, a 284 tranny will fit in a fiero. It's the prefered tranny to have but hard to locate normally (at least in toronto) Rodney Dickman sells at adapter kit needed for this tranny. We have a current member in the GTA Fiero Club whose using the 284 mated to a 3800SC with no problem.

I'm still using the stock 5spd in my fiero bolted up to a 3400 so far holding up good.

Don't they make bulletproof kits for the 282? Wouldn't using a built-up 282 make more sense than using a 284 that you will never be able to rebuild due to lack of rebuild kits?
