Damn, I can't remember if this has been brought up before. Probably has, but anyways.

In a 1997 3100 N-body with a 4T40-E transmission, is it possible to replace it with a 4T65-E from a 3100 W-body? What I mean by 'is it possible' is 'is it practical'. You guys always give the impression that if we so much as look at a 4T4x-E hard enough, it'll exploded into a dazzling display of 4 billion pieces. Which is to say nothing of adding a couple dozen hp.

John from APoC is pushing in excess of 300hp through his 45E with no appearant problems. The biggest thing I would think would cause problems is the size... not sure a 4T65-E would fit in the engine bay.

Hrm, okay. Cause over when we were still at GMF, I kept reading rants about how much the 40E/45E sucked and couldn't handle any power and all that. You think a 40E would be fine with less than 50 additional hp?

There are plenty of people over on GAGT.com that are pushing decent amounts of power through them, and the majority of them aren't having any issues. I think they just bump up the line pressure and all is good.

If you are putting out way more than stock power on a 3.1 then you can use the torque converter from the 3.4. It has a lower torque multipier ratio and would prevent it from fragging so easily. The difference between some converters is so small and not visable that you can easily use the wrong one, since they all fit each engine but are made for only so much torque
Why pay someone to do the work, it costs alot and you don\'t learn s*^t!!!

I was talking with a guy who put a 3400 into a '97 or '96 N-Body (orginally had a 3100 with 4T60E). He had the whole setup from a newer N-Body complete with transmission. He said that he would have had to have different mounts made to switch to the 4T4xE. But like Brad said, there are some people pushing good power through those things without breaking them.
