  • removing engine, trans maintenance?

I am going to be removing my engine, while I have it out is there any trans maintenace I should preform to try and make it last longer? 181,000 miles. Thanks.

do a service on it. basicly, take the pan off (not the sidecover), change the filter and gasket, clean the pan out. if there is excesive metal or clutch material, consider going through it, or take it to a tranny shop to go through. also, take the torque converter out and flip it upside down in a bucket to drain most of the oil from it.

assuming its a w body. With the miles on it for sure consider tearing the trans apart and rebuilding it . FWDs have this thing about exploding(depending on your right foot size) high mile trannies after a fresh engine rebuild.

NO! 4T60-E is very reliable! I'm only on my third in less than a year. If you got it out already, by all means, have it rebuilt and make sure the pin in the final drive is replaced with a hardened one. This is where my second one puked and cost me a case.

How much will a rebuild be?
Will the rebuild be cheaper since the tranny is not blown?
Also would it be cheaper for me to disassemble the trans or just leave it to them?
            Thanks.

it will be cheaper being its not smoked. when a tranny is smoked (or blown) you get a lot of clutch material and metal floating around through there that jams up valves and solenoids, destroys hard parts, ect. its best to take it in and have them go through it now, as it will be a ton cheaper.

id leave it together and take it to them. its easier for them to build it when they organise it, inspect parts as they come out, ect. it wont cost much (if anything) more for them to take it apart. i can blow apart a 4t60e in less than 1/2 an hour.

My 4t60E was rebuilt by a guy who does it on the side for $450. I have seen quotes as high as $2000 tho.

I can't really afford to drop 350-400 bucks into the trans when I am rebuilding the engine.

I think I will stick with dropping the pan, changing the filter, draining torque converter.

How hard is it to replace the front seal, if it is not hard I will also do that.

Also I was looking at a shift improvement kit, will this help with a high mileage trans or will it drive it into the ground since I read it firms up shifts.

                  Thanks.

Need to find a way to rebuild the tranny. Too many miles on it, no history, It's that deal of pay a little now, or pay a lot later. I got the T-Shirt. Just my opinion.

Sometimes it pays off to go buy a beater with a heater for something to get around in. Then you can do the things you need to do a little at a time. Rebuild that tranny.

I assume this tranny would be the 4060-E, do you think if I put a shift improvement kit in it that it would help it or destroy it?
