  • 3.1L 5 speed questions

I pulled a 3.1L 5 speed tranny out of a 1991 Z24, now I have a 94 2.2 auto that I will be dropping it into with a 3400. The 91 has the mechanical cable for the speedometer, and Ive got the 94 V6 gauge cluster with the electronic cable for the speedometer.

My question is this... what can I do about this problem that I have with the different speedometer cables. I would prefer to use the electical signal speedometer cable.

The mechanical one is normally a constant rising voltage and the electronic one is usally a pulse single that reads teeth on a drive axle inside the autotranny, usally the speed sensor. But basically you need to know how many teeth are on there. The dealer ship can probally tell you i forget the name of the ring but ill find it out and leave it. or if you tell me what autotranny it is i can find it out. But basically you need to make what is called a 555 timer. It will convert the volatage to a pulse and then you can calabtare it your self. But there is also some math involved to figure out everything. Well hope this helps out. Paulie

You will need to split the case to access the diff. The reluctor ring shown is the one you need. Just swap the parts and buy a new VSS and your set.

FYI the plastic ring I'm holding is from a Fiero Getrag.
